100 Years! Harrisburg Rotary Celebrates Centennial with Tree Planting

Harrisburg-Rotary-Centennial

The City of Harrisburg Arbor Day program and the Rotary Club of Harrisburg's Centennial Project tree planting ceremony at Riverfront Park.  Our own Robert Saline commemorated the celebration with the following:

"Mayor Thompson, Rotary District 7390 Governor Connie Spark, Past District Governor Chuck Cenkner, distinguished guests and fellow Rotarians, today at the request of our current Rotary President Carolyn C Dumaresq and our incoming President Dr. John Judson, I want to note that the Rotary Club of Harrisburg is entering its 100th year of local and international service...

The Harrisburg Rotary Club was the 23rd club in a global organization now consisting of more than 1.2 million members in 33,000 clubs serving more than 200 countries.

In recent years, the Harrisburg Rotary Club has worked on projects in Domican Republic and Haiti. We have participated in Rotary’s massive effort to rid the world of polio by giving immunizations to children in Ethiopia.

Our major focus, however, has been on local projects. Rotary Club of Harrisburg members have enjoyed providing major support for the Harrisburg School District. Our one-of-a-kind, Youth Community Development Team effort has taught leadership skills and philanthropy to high school students in Harrisburg schools for the past five years.

The Rotary Club of Harrisburg, in cooperation with other regional Rotary Clubs has conducted two eye exam projects at the Foose elementary school to identify children with visual impairment and to provide them with eyeglasses.

Today we are happy to be here to join with the City of Harrisburg in this Arbor Day celebration. We are also marking the beginning of the Rotary Club of Harrisburg’s Centennial Project with the planting of these trees. Over the next year, we will work with the City of Harrisburg to plant a total of 100 trees here in Riverfront Park to celebrate our 100 years of service both to this fine city and to our global neighbors.

The Board and Centennial Committee of the Rotary Club of Harrisburg appreciate the City of Harrisburg‘s support and partnership in this forward-looking project."rotary-tree-planting-2010-2
