Harrisburg Rotary dedicates 100 trees in recognition of 100 years

Harrisburg-rotary-100-yearsOn Monday, May 16, 2011, members of the Rotary Club of Harrisburg kicked off the club's 2011 Centennial Celebration with a tree and plaque dedication ceremony to further beautify the city of Harrisburg. The project to plant 100 trees at both Riverfront and Reservoir Parks was chosen in celebration of the club's 100 year anniversary of community service in the city. Funding for the project came primarily through donations from Rotary Club of Harrisburg membership, partnering organizations and businesses, and neighboring clubs.

Successful Youth Exchange Weekend!

youth-exchange-weekendThe Harrisburg rotary Club hosted the international exchange students on the weekend of March 19th. Some of the students stated that it was their favorite of all this year’s weekends in the District. The weekend began with a tour of the State Capitol. This was followed by a visit to the Pennsylvania State Museum. The students then had lunch at Strawberry Square where some of them were able to see part of the St. Patrick’s Day Parade. After lunch the students saw the IMAX movie "Under the Sea". On the way back to the Y the students had a walk along the waterfront and across the Walnut Street Bridge to City Island. At the YMCA the students had a pizza party dinner and then were able to avail themselves of the Y facilities such as volleyball, basketball, and the exercise equipment or just "hang out". The weekend ended with breakfast at the Y on Sunday morning before the very tired students left for home. 14 Rotarians assisted with the weekend.

Special thanks to Stephen Feinour and Ron Guss, Coordinators

David Morrison said that the incoming HACC President is a Rotarian; and Charlie McNutt and wife will celebrate their 49th anniversary this Thursday. Bridget Montgomery’s son in NYC received a promotion at his job, and he and his wife are expecting a baby.

PROGRAM.
President John announced that a large group of new Paul Harris Fellows would be proclaimed today, with Sergeant-at-Arms Richard Utley assisting in presenting them with their certificates and pins.

Current District Governor Will Kirkpatrick explained what the Rotary Foundation is, and described its many good causes worldwide. He thanked the Harrisburg Club for all the monies contributed over the years, and then introduced PDG Chuck Cenkner.

PDG Cenkner that that in these tumultuous times, much cannot be predicted. He quoted Thoreau in saying that “goodness is the only investment that never fails.” When we invest in the Rotary International Foundation, we are investing in good for all. The Foundation was founded in 1917 with a balance of $26.50. In 1947, when Paul Harris died, the Foundation balance topped $600,000. Thanks to donations totaling $228,000 made in memoriam at his death, the Foundation began to grow steadily. In the 1950’s it was decided to award Paul Harris Fellowships to those individuals who had contributed $1000. The goal of the Foundation is to promote understanding and peace worldwide. Paul Harris Fellowships were awarded to Mother Theresa and Pearl Bailey, for instance.

PDG Cenkner then named the group of Rotarians who were being awarded Paul Harris Fellowships today: Dave Bartoli, Nathan Bitner, Bob Chamberlin, Chuck Friedman, Betty Hungerford, Jeff Boswell, Bill Boles, Rich Bowra, David Morrison, Maria Persico, Barry Ramper, Andy Rebuck,

President John recognized the group as new Paul Harris Fellows, saying they were now part of the million+ group of Fellows throughout the world, including such illustrious individuals as Prince Charles, King Hussein of Jordan, Nelson Mandela, and the Pope!

PDG Cenkner went on to say that most Rotary International grants fund water and sanitation projects, economic and community development, education initiatives, mother and children health issues, and polio eradication. The majority of Rotary projects help children, and involve risk. At this point, Chuck Cenkner named Rotarians who would receive new Paul Harris pins in recognition of their steadfast contributions of time, talent, and funds. The following Rotarians received became a Paul Harris Fellow: Sandra Arnoldi, (wife of Tom Arnoldi), Dave Bartoli, Nathan Bitner, Bill Boles, Jeff Boswell, Rich Bowra, Bob Chamberlain, Harry Derrick, Lee Fortenberry, Chuck Friedman, John Griner, Tom Hooker, Betty Hungerford, Jack Huskin, Joe Metz, Dave Morrison, Rich Moultrie, Ira Packman, Maria Persico, Barry Ramper, Andy Rebuck, Jim Smeltzer and Craig Wisman.

Paul Harris Fellow +1:
Joe Bedard, Chris Cavanaugh, Wil Everhart , Dave Freet, Sally Klein, Charlie McNutt, Gib Parthemore
Henry Rhoads, Bill Robinson, Bob Saline, Mark Stone and John Sutliff.

Paul Harris Fellow +2:
Janice Black, Carolyn Dumaresq, Bob Hostetter, John Judson, Ron Katzman, Gerry Kohn, Karen Paris, Albert Schmidt and Greg Sutliff.

Paul Harris Fellow +3: Tom Arnoldi and Bob Craumer.

Paul Harris Fellow +4: Bill Murray.

PDG Cenkner thanked the Club again for members’ ongoing support, and their investment in the future of humanity.  He continued by noting that in 1957, the $1000 donation requirement was more major than in today’s economy. In 1957, for instance, average annual income was only $4050, and gas was only  $.23 per gallon. For those Rotarians who wish to contribute at a higher level than $1000, the Paul Harris Society was created.

PDG Cenkner thanked the Club on behalf of the Trustees of the Foundation and the children of the world.

President John presented the three District presenters with gifts from the Club, and announced there is no meeting next Monday.
