Day 3- 2009 Rotary International Convention

UnaMONDAY'S HIGHLIGHTS AT RI INCLUDED A PROVOCATIVE PRESENTATION FROM CLARISSA BROCKLEHURST, CHIEF OF WATER SANITATION AT ROTARY INTERNATIONAL.  HER SPEECH WAS SUPPOSED TO FOCUS ON WATER SANITATION AND HYGIENE, BUT SHE REFERRED TO IT AS "TAPS, TOILETS AND SOAP" IN A VERY DOWN TO EARTH DELIVERY OF HARD TO STOMACH INFORMATION.  CLEAN WATER AND ACCESS TO CLEAN WATER IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES ARE ESSENTIAL FOR SO MUCH THAN HEALTH AND HYGIENE - INCLUDING THE ABILITY TO ATTEND SCHOOL AND LEARN TO WORK.

The opening plenary session on Sunday afternoon was like Rotary's own version of the Olympics.  Flags from 154 rotary nations were presented to open the conference.  Greetings from the president of rotary international, DK Lee, were extended in a heartfelt speech in which he introduced his entire family (two daughters, two sons, two son-in-laws, one daughter-in-law, five grand children and his lovely wife, young).

Day 1- 2009 Rotary International Convention

UnaGreetings from Birmingham!

The Rotary International Convention actually began back in Philly on Saturday when I met up with fellow Rotarians from Maine, North Carolina, New Jersey, the Bahamas and several other locations as we boarded the plane.  I am happy to report that the 200 member Harrisburg club is larger than any of the other clubs that were represented on the plane.  I had the chance to explain that I received the Hanson scholarship to attend the convention which was an idea met with much enthusiasm by the other clubs.  We arrived safely in Birmingham where welcome signs, flags, banners and all manner of greeting met incoming Rotarians.
