PROGRAM: The Four-Way Test Essay contest was initiated in District 7390 in 2006/07 by the Rotary Club of Mechanicsburg-North and today 14 clubs in the district participate.  The goal is to increase the awareness, understanding and practice of the Four Way Test among young people in the local school districts.  In our case, 9th grade students at John Harris, Sci Tech and Bishop McDevitt High Schools were invited to answer how the Four Way Test affects what they think, say and/or do.  Students were required to submit their essays, no more than 1500 words, through their English departments and the English teachers screened the submissions prior to forwarding the finalists to our club.  Our club convened a committee of judges who recently screened, scored, and ranked 7 student essays from John Harris.  Of the 7 submissions, the judges selected three finalists to read their essays as the club program.

The 9th grade student finalists are:
Ajahboo Holmes
Albert Molina
Qadirah Williams

All of the finalists are from John Harris High School and their English teacher is Mrs. Colleen Forester.  One of the judges had this to say about the whole process: “I am always touched by the personal stories of these students and their daily struggles…The one thing that impressed me about the essay contest responses was the effort of the English teacher. These essays were well written. It is obvious that the teacher took time and great effort to work with these kids. It's teachers such as this that will make a difference to help these kids have a future, in spite of their challenges from home.”

The Rotary District 7390 prescribes cash prizes for the winners at the rate of $500 for 1st, $300 for 2nd, and $100 for third place.  The prize money for this year’s winners was provided through generous donations from our fellow Rotarians Christine and John Cavanaugh and Michael Love.  In addition, Rotarian Sam Levine was so moved by the student essays, that he personally contributed $50 each as a prize for the remaining four essayists.

Please express a warm Rotary Club of Harrisburg THANKS to the Essay Contest Committee members and judges: Rich Bowra, James Good, Ron Guss, Bob Hostetter, Doug Peiper, Sam Levine, Una Martone, Bob Saline, Karen Snider and Mark Totaro.

LAST ROTARY MEETING:  2/6/12

Minutes by  Karen Paris:
Prior to the meeting Norma Swain just mesmerized the crowd with her selections, including “Alexander’s Rag-Time Band” and “St. Louis Blues”  (whose title escaped this writer but Jim “Not-Afraid-To-Ask” Good queried Norma for the correct answer.)
President Bob called the meeting to order at 12:12 PM .  Bridget Montgomery spoke about integrity, compassion and service to others as part of the invocation. Caryn Carr then led us in “America the Beautiful.”
What a day for meet’n’greets!  Lots of hand-pumping and noise filled the room and for a minute this minute-taker thought that there would be no more minutes.  Lots of post-game talk, like “Jim’s wife went to bed upset at the result but he didn’t really care who won because he had no money in the game” occurred.  However, in his skillful manner, Pres. Bob pulled us to order again and gave Norma a hearty thank you for sharing her beautiful talents with us.
Then he introduced Sam Levine who introduced a lot of guests.  Gary, Ginny, Ron, Steve, Lisa, Kent and Susan all brought guests.  We also had a visiting Rotarian from Colonial Park.
President Bob recognized the group who is leaving for India and noted that at the Presbytery in Camp Hill there will be a farewell gathering for them on Friday at noon.  He encouraged all to come to wish them well.
Una Martone made two announcements.  First, she said she was extremely proud of the YCDT who made a presentation at the Chamber. Students from John Harris, Sci Tech and Bishop McDevitt were part of the group.  Una requested that Rotarians make a pledge in support of their efforts.  She also announced a new endeavor for students.  9th graders had an opportunity to enter an essay contest, writing 1500 words on what the 4 Way Test means in their lives.  The three finalists will be coming to our Club next week to share their essay.  Cash prizes were awarded thanks to some very generous Rotarians.  Una said to come prepared for some very moving essays.  Bob thanked several Rotarians for their role in judging these essays.  We are the 14th Club in the District to adopt this contest.
John Judson took front-and-center and spoke about the Rotary International Foundation gift from Rotarians.  The Club asks each Rotarian to commit $100 a year to the work of the Foundation.  In the case of India, John noted that all of the expenses that members incur to make these trips are paid by the member.  RI only pays for the vaccinations, etc.  He reiterated how many lives are positively affected by the gifts Rotarians give each year.  President Bob noted that Rotarians now have the option of joining the Paul Harris Society by making a $1000 gift annually – John and his wife Ann Marie already do that in addition to their work.
Janice Black, PDG, took the podium to make a special announcement.  John Judson has been nominated to serve as the District Governor for District 7390 for the year 2014-2015.  What a fitting honor for someone who is so committed to RI and service.  Congratulations, John!

Speaking of District, the District Conference will be held  March 30 and April 1, 2012 in Williamsburg.  You can register on-line.
President Bob also had a happy announcement – 82% of the Club has paid their $100 contribution to the Harrisburg Rotary Foundation.  He reminded people that in the second half of the Rotary year, the International Foundation contribution becomes the Club’s focus.
Bob Hostetter introduced our speaker, noting that it is a “long tradition at ole’ Club 43” of having the Mayor of Harrisburg speak annually to our Club about the State of the City.  He noted that the Honorable Linda Thompson was sworn in as Mayor in 2010.  She’s a native Harrisburger, a graduate of Howard University, Leadership Harrisburg, was a prior member of our Club, and was on Harrisburg City Council prior to becoming the Mayor.
Mayor Thompson took the podium and gave a great Rotary joke (how does she know our Club that well?).  She thanked Rotary for the role it played in planting 100 trees in the City and said that the Club’s work with children is remarkable.
She spoke about three areas of accomplishments that she has had over the past year as Mayor.  The first is long-term financial stability.  She stressed that Act 47 was a good move for Harrisburg’s future.  Although she’s not read the Receiver’s report, the plan is what she has been recommending all along.  She has cut jobs, cut costs and over the next two years hope to achieve financial stability.
Her next focus was on public safety.  In that regard, she feels that in order to move here or do business in this community, people need to feel safe.  She has police out on the street, there is training going on in neighborhoods (especially the mid-town area) to help prevent crime, bicycle patrols have been initiated, the PAL (Police Athletic League) has been re-invigorated, there are more after-school programs to keep kids off the streets, she started a new health and wellness program for youth, and she goes out on patrol every year (on a bike).  The crime rate has come down over the past two years, and 100% of the homicides in 2011 were solved.
Her third focus is future economic development.  She noted that for it to be successful, the first two initiatives need to happen.  There have been strides made in this area – many new jobs have been created, more new businesses have started up  and the 2011 Business Expo was a success with over 500 businesses participating.  There has been an active demolition program along with new projects in the City.  Mayor Thompson cited the need to have minority businesses involved since the City is 67% minority populations and this makes smart business sense.
Over the next two years she wants to “stay the course” for financial stability and the health and safety of the citizens of Harrisburg.  “We are one great city and one community and we share one future”. She closed noting that her focus is people and neighborhoods, businesses, and visitors.
After receiving a standing ovation, President Bob thanked the Mayor and presented her a Rotary pen.
He closed the meeting noting that the Corporate Membership meeting is being held after this meeting adjourns.
