NEWS AND NOTES:
Clothing the Homeless:  Fellow Rotarians, many of you are generously donating your time to help with housing the homeless at Susquehanna Harbor Safe Haven, and we thank you for that.  Please check your closets for any spare new or gently used men’s large (or bigger) winter coats and size 10(or bigger) winter boots to help these men through the cold season.  We are also collecting new white sports socks and t-shirts for them (we also suggest large sizes).  Please bring any such items to the Rotary club meetings in January or February where we will collect them.  If you are volunteering at the shelter, feel free to bring such items yourself and give them to Mike.
Thanks, Ira and Corinne

The York Rotary Club in conjunction with the York JCC is again coordinating an Experience to Israel similar to the very successful trip led by York Rotary in 2010 - www.rotaryjccexperience2israel.com. Our York Rotary Club would like to extend the invitation to our District 7390 to join us on this exciting once-in-a-lifetime trip from October 24 to November 2, 2012! In 2010, 25 visited the many Christian, Jewish and Islamic sites which were the birthplace of all 3 religions; met with many Israelis feeling the heart, soul and pulse of the little miracle of Israel; and learned about this tiny country's now 64-year modern history. In October, 25 to 50 are anticipated to again visit with fellow Rotarians in Gedera, Israel; and plant a tree in the Rotary Peace Forrest in Safed, Israel!!
Relevant info is on the www.rotaryjccexperience2israel.com website.

LAST ROTARY MEETING:  1/23/12
Minutes by Peter Henninger:
As I wandered into the January 23, 2012 meeting of the Harrisburg Rotary Club, I sat down at a table and noticed Tom Peluso in deep conversation with Doug Pieper.  It didn’t initially strike me as odd, but I just happened to notice this.  After President Bob called the meeting to order at 12:15 p.m., and Carolyn Dumaresq provided the invocation, I then discovered what this deep conversation was about.  Tom Peluso was leading the Club in the singing of “America the Beautiful” this day, and obviously was receiving a pep talk from Doug Pieper since I did overhear Doug tell Tom “whatever you do, don’t feel you need to sing like Steven Tyler”. Tom rose to the occasion and led the Club in a fine rendition of “America the Beautiful”. After greeting our fellow members and guests, Charlie McNutt introduced our visiting Rotarians and Robin Scaer introduced her family and friends who were in attendance. Charlie McNutt then introduced his guest, his good friend and former Harrisburg Rotary Club member, Dave McClane.
Lori Hoffmaster then took the podium for her mini classisification speech. Lori related that she did undergraduate work at IUP, and received her Masters at Shippensburg in Human Relations, and related her career activities leading up to a four (4) year period from 2004 to 2008 where she took a hiatus from her human services work, reassessed her goals and her life, eventually returning to work in 2008 at the Contact Help Line, leading eventually to Channels in June of 2011.  She noted that Channels had given her a renewed passion to help others as others had helped her in her life.  She related her pride in her daughter, who is a very successful athlete in Cumberland Valley School District and indicated that she looked forward to her continued involvement with the Harrisburg Rotary Club.
President Bob then introduced the previous Robert D. Hanson Award Winners in attendance, Betty Hungerford, Uno Martone, Kent Freese, Dr. John Judson, Karen Snider, and Andy Rebuck. President Bob also welcomed a couple of new members and noted that the polio immunization team send off was coming up on February 10, 2012. Ira Packman and Corinne Rebinski took to the podium to report on the homeless sleepover initiative.  Corinne reported that we were one (1) week down and one and a half (1 ½ ) to go and that so far it had been relatively incident free.  Corinne noted that one of the needs is winter coats and boots for the men, L, XL in coats and size 10 or larger boots. She also indicated that white socks and t-shirts are always a necessity. Dr. Packman read a letter of thanks from Brian Davis, the chair of Capital Area Coalition on Homelessness thanking the Rotary Club for our involvement in the project “Homeless Connect”.  It was then noted that there is a Red Cross blood drive which is going to occur on April 2, 2012 prior to, during and after the Rotary Club meeting that date.
Dr. John Judson then introduced our 2012 Robert D. Hanson Rotary Excellence Award winner, Robin Scaer, noting that the award was created as an incentive to build leadership in the Club. Robin has been involved from day one in the Harrisburg Rotary Club, and the pancake breakfast, is a new Board member, and has served as first year Rotarian committee chair.  Robin’s outside activities include involvement with the YWCA, the Harrisburg Symphony, the Museum of Science and Discovery, and her Children’s Athletic Clubs.  Robin, a 1989, cum laude graduate of IUP has spent her professional life working for non-profits and is currently and has been for the past six (6) years, the marketing and membership director for the Hershey Harrisburg Regional Visitors Bureau. Robin then took the podium, thanked her family for being here today to support her, thanked the selection committee and all club members.  Robin offered a special thanks to Lisa Lewis, who was instrumental in exposing her to Rotary and proposing her as a member of the Harrisburg Rotary Club.  Robin spoke about the responsibility of living accordingly in the Four-Way Test, that we all need to be aware of our gifts, that we need to continue to help others, and to share our gifts and ability to help others.  Robin related her involvement in Rotary goes back to her grandfather, who in 1938 was a charter member in the Evans City Rotary Club.  She also noted that she had discovered that in addition to her grandfather, she had two great uncles and a great grandfather who were also members of Rotary. Robin then related that in reviewing the family archives, that she found many Rotary-related items, one of which was a handbook from 1938.  Robin related that one of the questions that is asked from time to time of all of us as Rotarians is “What is Rotary?” Robin noted that the Rotary is different things to different people, but that we as Rotarians know what Rotary is to us. Robin closed by talking about how the Rotary motto of Service Above Self must be translated into action and challenged all of us to continue to live our lives according to the Four-Way Test and the Rotary motto.
After a well-deserved standing ovation, President Bob then took to the podium and closed the meeting.
