LAST ROTARY MEETING:  10/31/11
Minutes by Andy Rebuck:
“Trick or treat.”

This scribe might guess that you have heard these words expressed by a little cowboy, a princess, a superhero and many others when you opened your door on Halloween evening.

Just for the fun of it let’s take these words to today’s Rotary meeting.

It certainly was not a treat to be missing Norma “Piano Player” Swain.  It was a treat to have Dick Stewart offer the invocation and Tom “Stand on a chair” Pelosi belt out the club song.  Bill “Sweet Treat” Spahr announced Rotarians’ Wert, Persico and Cavanaugh had guests, and that we had a visiting Rotarian from Red Lion Club.

President “Boo” Saline was not scary at all when he noted John “Free Cars for All” Sutliff would coordinate teacher/student of month awards for Bishop McDevitt, John Harris and Sci Tech.  Now these awardees were a treat for sure!

Like a group of youngsters moving to the neighbor’s door, our meeting was definitely in high gear as Jim Nelson, President of the Keystone Club, introduced Carlos Lopez, a lifetime educator and Asst. to Superintendant at Harrisburg High School.  Speaking of moving with vim and vigor of a youngster enjoying a Halloween night, Carlos was energetic, fired up and all that as he spoke about inspiring students and adults with the four way test, ways to nurture diversity in the workplace and phrases or quotes that can drive efforts to keep the dream of service to the community alive and well.

There was no need for the next speaker to do back flips or card tricks to earn a treat, as Joseph Robinson was on the money with his personable, warm and witty presentation about the eight progressive steps to conflict resolution.  He noted that this was not rocket science stuff and that quite simply much conflict comes from a lack of education on ways our youth can deal with hostility.

The proverbial goodie bag was almost filled to the brim when our meeting took a short detour to auction off the four remaining items to support the Pancake Breakfast and Harrisburg High Students.  As easy as guessing who might be hiding behind that mask, our club members stood up and raised the total via the auction effort to over $6,800.

Meeting adjourned 1:13 (ooh, scary 13) and all members were urged to have a safe and fun trick or treat.
