Program- District Governor Helen Redding introduced by Dave Ritter, Assistant District Governor

The Rotary Club of Harrisburg was the next stop on District Governor Redding's tour of clubs in our district. Ms. Redding reminded us of the strength of Rotary International in the world with 1.2 million members in 34,000 clubs/535 districts located in some 200 countries.  Polio eradication is still the number one goal of the organization.  Type 2 polio has all but been eradicated, however some 500 cases each year wordwide continue to surface.  She spoke of the areas of focus of the international organization to include peace/conflict resolution, clean water, basic education, and community/economic development.  She spoke of the area of emphasis of our Rotary International President to include family and home, continuity of things that we do well, and being open-minded to change.

Her goals for the rotary year include addressing the declining membership within the district, increasing foundation giving, and encouraging local clubs to promote our projects and activities to our local and world community. She highlighted some of the projects that clubs in the district have done in the last several years. These projects include assisting El Salvador with six water wells, eye mission trips to South America, development of a dental clinic in the Dominican Republic, assisting the food bank in York, donation of trees on Harrisburg's waterfront. Ordinary people doing extraordinary things to help local and international communities.

She highlighted the important work that the District does with sponsoring district assemblies and conferences, and President Elect Training Seminars (PETS). The District exists to help make the club's successful. She reminded all of the district conference to be held in Williamsburg, Virginia from March 29th through April 1st.

President Saline sent us on our way at 1:08 P.M. Our next meeting will be held on Monday, January 23rd at the Hilton Hotel.
