PROGRAM:  YOUTH COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT TEAM  (YCDT)
On April 10, 41 high school students, different ages, different schools, different socio-economic backgrounds, different races, different colors and sizes all stood up in UNANIMOUS support of the Christian Recovery Aftercare Ministries and voted to award $5,000 to this grassroots nonprofit organization.  Ms. Juanita Grant presented a compelling case for support to the YCDT Class of 2012 citing her life changing experiences after 15 years of addiction and incarceration and her sheer will to help others achieve recovery and quality of life after prison.   CRAM was incorporated and received its 501c3 status in 2002. Its initial purpose was to work with people in all aspects of recovery from any situation, with a Christ focused perspective.  With 12 volunteers, 4 part time staff, 1 part time teacher and 3 HIV counselors, CRAM has served 584 people since its inception.  The $5,000 grant award will allow CRAM to expand services to the ever growing number of people in need.  Since CRAM operates in a rent-free facility, all YCDT grant monies will directly support programming.

So how did it all happen?  This week’s program will be delivered by 6 YCDT students from John Harris High School, Sci Tech and Bishop McDevitt who will share their experiences with you.  The students will then present the $5,000 check to CRAM and Juanita Grant will make brief remarks and answer questions.

This is Rotary service in action!  Come learn more about the activities of the Youth Community Development Team.

LAST ROTARY MEETING:  4/16/12      Minutes by Jacqueline Jackson-DeGarcia:
The meeting was brought to order by President Bob at 12:15.  After a thoughtful invocation by Carolyn Dumaresq and American the Beautiful led by Caryn Carr, we began our announcements.

Congrats to new dad – Anthony Mosca.  Reminder Roster Ads are available and Committee Chair reports are due.  Thanks to Andy for pinch hitting with our exchange student.  Also thanks to all who attended the Strategic Planning Retreat and making the next year’s plan for our Club!!

Our speaker today was Kelly Lewis who has a lengthy and varied resume.  Although he has many experiences, today he talked to us about his current endeavor – President and CEO of TechQuest Pennsylvania.  Kelly reminded us that technology is alive and well in Pennsylvania – a Commonwealth with the 22nd largest economy in the world (IMAGINE THAT – LITTLE OLE PA).  In addition to those facts, there are two items that most took away from Kelly’s program – the internship program and the TechQuest4Kids program.

The internship program is student led.  Funded through grants, it offers many internship opportunities to local students to give them an opportunity gain experience while completing their education in various technology fields with well-known companies.  This is a wonderful opportunity for students who might never have such an opportunity!

Second is the TechQuest4Kids program – a program whose initiative is to provide 1000 computers to replace the archaic ones in the Harrisburg School District.  Donations of money and older computers may be made.  The computers are reclaimed so-to-speak and then donated to the School District.  If the goal of 1000 computers is met, Microsoft will provide free training to the students.  Information was included in the brochures at the tables.

See you at the IMAX and the ballet this week.
