DISTRICT NEWS:
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
D-7390 Polio Team
India –February, 2012

Polio has been nearly eradicated in our world and is now endemic in only four countries – Afghanistan, Pakistan, Nigeria, and India.   Of these, India and Nigeria have made tremendous progress in the past two years.  India may soon be declared Polio free.  The last stages of this battle, however, are critically important because 100% elimination of the disease is necessary to avoid future resurgence.  Our district has a unique opportunity to participate in this final battle.

A team from our district will join with D-7790 to travel to India and to participate in National Immunization Days (NID).  Along with fellow Rotarians from the United States and India, we will administer oral polio vaccine to children under age 5 in their homes as well as in vaccination centers.  Past District 7790 Governor, Nancy Barbee has traveled to India on many occasions for humanitarian missions and, one year ago, led a similar team for polio immunizations.  She is also very familiar with the culture, history, and scenic attractions in India.  We are fortunate to have her as the US leader for this historic participation in what may be one of the final rounds of NID in India.  The schedule will allow our team to visit polio rehabilitation centers, attend cultural events, visit other Rotary Clubs, and see some of India’s historical sites.

The approximate cost to participate in this remarkable volunteer effort will be between $3000 and $3500.  This will include airfare, in-country travel and 10 to 14 days lodging and food.   D-7390 Rotarians and spouses are encouraged to contact Dr. John Judson for more information ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it / 717-877-0871). We have the tentative schedule for our time in India and are informed that the NID will be in February.  The exact date of departure will be announced as soon as India determines the NID dates.  Please see trip outline below.

LAST ROTARY MEETING:  12/5/11
Minutes by Mark Stone:
As is customary President Bob Saline rang the opening bell at 12:10 P.M. and another weekly meeting of the Rotary Club of Harrisburg was under way.  Dick Stewart led us in prayer, followed by the singing of America the Beautiful and a pledge to our flag.

A number of Rotarians introduced their guest. No visiting Rotarians were in attendance.

Mini Classification talk:  John Kooti, Ph.D., Dean, College of Business Administration, Shippensburg University. We learned that John Kooti was born in southwest Iran in the rich oil fields of that country.  After earning a Bachelor degree in his country, he received a scholarship from the Iran government to attend Michigan State University where he spent five years earing his Master's and Doctorate degrees in accounting and finance.  He left the cold of Michigan and spent 28 years in the Georgia state system of colleges teaching business administration. In 2010 he was named Dean of the John Grove College of Business Administration at Shippensburg University.  He has been married for thirty-one years and has three children. He is also past president of a rotary club in Georgia.

President Bob Saline reminded us of the Homeless Initiative with the Safe Harbor Shelter on Cameron Street. Our club has committed to "man" the shelter with club volunteers for sixteen nights in the month of January 2012.

Carrie Wissler-Thomas: Rotarians in the News.  Carrie shared the good news of Steve Feinour's firm Nauman Smith and their one hundred forty year history that was recently highlighted in the Patriot News. Also, Bridget Montgomery's home in Bellevue Park was highlighted.

Pancake Committee Report: Karen Paris and Jacqueline Jackson-DeGarcia report that the net proceeds from the pancake breakfast held in October will be $25,077.00. Of this amount $21,077 will go back to the John Harris campus of Harrisburg High School and $4,000 will be reserved by the Harisburg club toward scholarships for deserving students.

President Bob Saline informed us that our past president, Dr. John Judson, is a candidate for district governor- elect of our local district. A resolution was read and a hand vote was taken in support of Dr. Judson's candidacy efforts.

Past President and Past District Governor Janice Black was called to the podium and spoke about the late Bob Hanson. Nominations for the Bob Hanson Excellence Award should be forwarded to Linda Freedenberg by Friday, December 9th.

Program: Wendell Murray- Founder and Director of BARAK, Inc.
Topic: "The Effects of Community Arts on Urban Youth"

Wendell Murray founded BARAK some twelve years ago as an organization that is attempting to transform lives and communities through the visual arts. The organization attempts to teach life skills to at risk youth within Harrisburg and surrounding communities through the use of art skills. The organization recruits part time professional artist to work with children in the Harrisburg school district, along with Steelton-Highspire and Susquehanna Township. Works of art within the community include some forty building murals at places such as the YWCA, Reservoir Park, and Dauphin County Administration Building. These programs help at risk youth discover self esteem while attempting to reduce the chance of becoming involved with drugs/alcohol, or other types of violence through directing their time and energy to the visual arts.  He explained that the word BARAK is the name of a general from the old testament and has a literal meaning of "Thunder Bolt of God" The organization also works with the Boys and Girls Club in Harrisburg.

The meeting was adjourned at 1:12 P.M.
