PROGRAM:
Stephen R. Reed was elected Mayor and Chief Executive Officer of the City of Harrisburg at the age of 32, taking office in 1982 and reelected six times since. In the past five- reelection bids he was the unprecedented nominee of both political parties. He is the longest serving mayor in Harrisburg history and is currently the longest-tenured mayor of all the Pennsylvania's cities. Prior to taking the helm of government in Pennsylvania’s Capital City, he served three terms as a member of the state’s House of representatives (1974-1980) and also served as a Dauphin Country Commissioner (1980-1981). He was the youngest legislator and youngest commissioner ever elected in Dauphin County and the second youngest Mayor in City history. He was born August 9, 1949, in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania. He is a 1967 graduate of Bishop McDevitt High School in Harrisburg and he attended historic Dickinson College in Carlisle.

NEWS AND NOTES:

Please return your updated Roster Information sheet, an updated photo (if you wish) and your 2007-08 committee selections.

• Breakfast with REACH Program
In appreciation of the Rotary Club of Harrisburg’s generous 2006-07 donation to the Harrisburg School District Early Childhood Program, please join Dr. Gerald Kohn, Superintendent, and members of the board of the Harrisburg Public School Foundation for breakfast at Camp Curtin School on Tuesday, May 15, at 8 a.m.

After breakfast you will have an opportunity to visit a preschool classroom and see the results of your generosity. It’s always a pleasure to meet the three- and four-year-olds toward the end of the school year, when the progress they have made over the year is quite evident.

The Harrisburg Preschool Program is a vital element in the reform of the Harrisburg School District. Results show that children who participate arrive at kindergarten ready to learn, with expanded vocabularies and improved math skills. They are also more independent learners and problem-solvers. Most importantly, however, they have been introduced to the excitement of learning in a hands-on environment, and this experience prepares them for school success and life-long learning.

We hope you can join us. In just one hour, you will be inspired by what you observe. Please RSVP to Lisa Paige, Executive Director of the Harrisburg Public School Foundation, at 717-703-4113 by May 5th.

• DISTRICT CONFERENCE Hershey Motor Lodge May 11-12
The District 7390 Conference will be held at the Hershey Motor Lodge on May 10 - 12. The Golf Outing will be held at Wren Dale Golf Course on Thursday, May 10. Plenary Sessions are Friday and Saturday, with evening dinners with RI Guest speakers and/or entertainment.

The theme of the Silent Auction is “Gifts from the Vine”. It will focus on upscale bottles of wine, but will include specialty baskets of wine glasses, cork screws, cheeses, crackers and other items associated with wine. In addition to the aforementioned items we are hoping for numerous “other” donations ($50 value and up) such as gift certificates, gift cards, and actual items such as new TVs, new stereos, or something along these lines. We feel this variety will appeal to a much broader range of attendees.

In addition to encouraging you to support Janice with your presence at the conference, we are asking you to donate any wine related, or non-wine related item (or gift basket) with a value of $50 or more. With your help, we can make this a very successful auction that enhances the delivery of services provided by the 40 clubs that make up District 7390, Rotary International.

You may contact Gib Parthemore at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it to arrange delivery or request a pick-up of your item. We would like to have your donation in hand prior to April 14, 2007. Thank you in advance for your donations and core belief in “Service Above Self”.

Brochure and registration forms are on the information table and can be downloaded at
http://www.hbgrotary.org

The ROTARY INTERNATIONAL FOUNDATION makes miracles happen around the world all year long, but your donation now will help us reach our goal even sooner. Send your check to the Rotary office. THANK YOU for your support.

• YOUTH EXCHANGE INFO
1. The annual Youth Exchange weekend was held March 17-18 despite Mother Nature's best efforts to disrupt our plans with a snowstorm. Although we had a late start, 16 inbound and outbound students were able to experience Harrisburg by touring the State Capitol, visiting the State Museum planetarium, the Whitaker Center Science Center and viewing an IMAX film at the Select Medical IMAX Theater. The evening was capped off by fun and games at the YMCA. Kudos to all who volunteered their time as chaperones and helped make this another successful event.

2. The Youth Exchange Committee has also received information on our prospective inbound student, Ange Sauvage. Ange is a 16-year old student from Lyon France. We will continue to update you as information is made available. If anyone is interested in serving as a host family for our 2007-08 exchange student, please contact the committee co-chairs Terry Barnaby or Ron Guss.

3. Our 2006-07 exchange student, Jose Ricardo Zambrano, from Venezuela has joined his third host family, Carolyn and Dick Dumaresq, and is attending school at Central Dauphin High School. We hope that you meet him soon. We would like to remind you that we are always looking for activities and American cultural experiences that our exchange students will enjoy. If you have any suggestions, opportunities or tickets available, please contact Ron Guss, Jose Ricardo's counselor, or Terry Barnaby, Co-Chair of the Youth Exchange committee.

• SUPPORT OUR WOUNDED TROOPS

Your contribution is 100% tax deductible.

The 2006-07 Rotary International Convention will be held in Salt Lake City, UT, June 17-20. Registration packets are available online at www.rotary.org.

Minutes by Steve Baloga
President Garry Brinton brought the meeting to order at the Hilton as customary with singing, the Pledge of Allegiance and an invocation.

Wil Everhart introduced visiting Rotarians and guests. He also announced that members should, from now on, bring a check or exact change for the $12.00 guest fee since the reception desk at meetings will no longer have change. This is a change from previous procedures.

Mini-Classification Talk:
Barry Goodling described his duties at Messiah College as VP for Advancement where he is responsible for fund raising, student recruitment, alumni relations, and similar activities. He provided a brief overview of Messiah’s academics, accomplishments, community activities and sports programs, as well as its long-time involvement with Harrisburg Rotary Club. Messiah has approximately 2,900 undergraduate students.

Announcements and Committee Reports:
President Garry thanked Bob Saline and Andy Rebuck (Lamar Advertising) for the great bill boards featuring Rotary around the Harrisburg Area.

Carrie Wissler Thomas introduced new member Guy Patterson.

Ron Guss announced that we are getting an Exchange Student from France this coming year who will be attending either Susquehanna Township or Central Dauphin high school. We are looking for a Rotary Counselor and 3 host families (taking 3 month stints). Contact Linda, Terry Barnaby or Ron to help.

Hal Hurwitz reminded everyone that the Community Service Committee is meeting April 16, 2007 to consider applicants for the Club’s Community Service award. The Committee is soliciting nominations. Applications can be obtained from Linda, and the award will be presented at the May 7, 2007 meeting.

As a follow-up to last week’s program, Jewel Cooper introduced Patty Kim, a member of Harrisburg City Council, who briefly described the “Get Busy Living” program as a way for members to help do something to alleviate crime.

Program:
Joan Prescott introduced our speaker, John C. Leighow, Director of The State Museum. Mr. Leighow noted that Joan was recently selected as Volunteer of the Year at the Museum. (Congratulations Joan!)

Mr. Leighow indicated that the Museum was celebrating its 100th anniversary. A gala celebration is scheduled for April 28, 2007; call Joan or the Museum if you are interested in attending to show your support for the Museum.

Mr. Leighow’s presentation covered the Museum’s history and provided a virtual tour of the facility through pictures.

The Museum is a great place for kids with its hands-on Curiosity Connection and planetarium attractions. The Museum hosts from 60,000 to 80,000 school students a year and can accommodate banquet events in its Memorial Hall under the shadow of William Penn’s larger-than-life statue.

He discussed the Museum’s new vision master plan and indicated that timing for these improvements and expansion are dependent on the timing of state funding.

Hours are from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM Tuesday through Saturday and Noon until 5:00 PM on Sunday.

No meeting next week because of the Passover/Easter Holiday. Mayor Reed will be the speaker at our April 16, 2007 meeting at the Hilton. Please call Linda if you expect to bring a guest.

President E. Garrett Brinton

President-Elect Carrie Wissler Thomas

Immediate Past-President Jewel Cooper

Secretary Carolyn Dumaresq
