Minutes by Jacqueline Jackson-DeGarcia:
The meeting began at 12:15pm with the invocation by Will Everhart and the singing of the National Anthem by John Hickey.  Bruce Grossman presented the guests and visiting Rotarians.
Our first order of business was to conduct the annual meeting.  A quorum of the Harrisburg Rotarians was present for the meeting.  Gary Brinton presented the slate of nominees for the 2011 Officer and Board positions. By unanimous vote, the membership approved the nominees.
Jeff Boswell presented proposed amendments to Article 1, section 1 and Article 2, sections 1-3 of our by-laws to reflect that the recipient of the Robert D. Hanson award will serve as a Board Member the following year. The change to the By-Laws was unanimously approved.
Dr. Packman reminded us that there will be no meeting April 11th due to the Red Cross Blood Drive.  There are still open slots remaining.
Jack Detweiler, Chairman of Rotary’s Ecological Committee, presented its award and scholarship to Jessica Murray, a Carlisle sophomore, for her project “Over Your Head.”  Jessica received many awards for this project and it is well deserved.  Congratulations Jessica!
I have the distinct honor and privilege of taking the minutes each time that Rotary presents its quarterly award to Harrisburg student and teachers.  It is truly one of my favorite meeting topics (next to the Pancake Breakfast, of course).  This quarter the following received the award:  from Sci-Tech High School, Jeremiah Straubaugh (a well-spoken young man with a bright future) and teacher, Michelle Felton; from John Harris High School, Freshman Dorian Beasley and Teacher Colleen Forster; and, from Bishop McDevitt,Elizabeth Chicashaw, who will attend the University of Pittsburgh in the fall, and teacher Carol Bush, a 28-year veteran.
Following these inspiring awards, our keynote speaker took the podium.  This week it was Gordon Tomb, Director of Energy Affairs for the Pittsburgh based PA Coalition for Responsible Government.  Mr. Tomb presented a speech with a message “There is No Free Lunch” focused on our role in picking our leaders.  His advocacy/editorial piece was light on fact but designed to evoke thought and response to how we choose leaders.
We ended the meeting with a recitation of the Four-Way Test.
Thank you to Dr. Judson for his year of service as President of the Harrisburg Rotary Club.  Dr. Judson you did a marvelous job and we are grateful for your service!!!
There is no regular meeting on April 4, 2011, and April 11th is the Red Cross Blood Drive.
