In addition, I'd like to donate a percentage of book purchases that day back to your Rotary Club.

NEWS AND NOTES:
Please RSVP to Linda. The Rotary Meeting on April 26th will be held at the PA Dept of Education - 333 Market St. Honors Room. On May 3rd we will be at Harrisburg University. There will be optional tours of the facility following the meeting at 1:15 PM.  If you are parked in the Walnut Street Garage, turn left into the Arcade from the garage elevators and head into Strawberry Square. Take the escalator down to the lower level and go to the corridor where Auntie Anne’s is located. The connector for Harrisburg University is a couple of doors down from Auntie Anne’s, on the same side (on the left). Go through the door and continue straight down the hall to the security desk. The attendant there will assist everyone up on the elevators located right there.  The event will be on the 12th floor. However there is no elevator on 12, so guests will need to go to 13 and walk down a flight. It’s an intentional part of their building design.

•  ROSTER INFORMATION SHEETS: Please return with any updated information and your committee selections for 2010-11.

The Fellowship Committee invites all members and their guests to attend our “Nine and Dine” events in 2010.  Once a month, at a different venue each month, we will play nine holes of golf and have a chance to grab a bite to eat and a cold drink.

In order to plan ahead and accommodate attendance every month we ask that you sign up either for the golf and dine package or either golf only or dine only.  In other words there will be a sign up sheet each month.  (You certainly can play golf with a preplanned group or ask to be grouped by the host of each event.)

This is not a fundraiser for the club-it is a fellowship event-but you will need to budget to pay the announced fees for the golf and food.  You will also receive a make up for attendance!

Our first Nine and Dine is Tuesday April 27th at the Armitage Golf Course and Caddy Shack Restaurant.  The package to play, ride a cart and get a $10 voucher for the restaurant that night is $21.99.  (The golf and ride only option is $15 and the Dine- only option is ala carte from the menu as we will not have a separate pricing set up.)

We can set up as many tee times as we need starting at 5:12 that day.  Please sign up today or as soon as you can as we will need to confirm our playing needs with the course in the next few weeks.

SAVE THE DATE!  Habitat for Humanity, May 8th.  Sign-up at the information table.

Minutes by Jacqueline Jackson-DeGarcia:
Today’s meeting reminded Rotarians of the incredible talents of the youth in our community.
This meeting began with an invocation by John Cavanaugh and we were led in singing Marion Alexander.  Our greeter with the never-ending smile Gib Parthemore introduced our guests which although few in number were significant as we welcomed back Sheldon Munn to the fold.

Andy Rebuck, our fearless activity leader invited us to the “Nine and Dine” program.  The first event is April 27th at Armitage Golf Course and Caddy Shack Restaurant.  For less than $22.00 you can play 9 holes of golf and eat at Caddy Shack Restaurant.  If you only want to golf, it is $15.00 and a la carte for dining only.  Currently there are 15 golfers signed up but plenty of room for more.  Please contact Andy or Linda for more information.

Maria Persico reminded us of Rotarians International tremendous Polio Plus effort to eradicate Polio.  Ninety members of our Harrisburg Rotary Club have contributed to this effort and we have until June 1st to increase this participation.

For those of us who have any power tool skills or who just want to use a paint brush are welcome to sign up for the Habitat for Humanity taking place on May 8th.  There are two time slots available and plenty of room for all to participate.  (And hopefully Karen Snider will not be asked to do roofing duty!)
This weekend, Thursday through Sunday, is the Rotary District Conference in Gettysburg.  All are welcome.

Congratulations Karen Snider!  Karen will receive a most well-deserved recognition on May 4th for her contribution to mental health services.  She is being honored for having an impact on how mental health services are delivered and for advocating for the recovery philosophy.  Way to go Karen!

All too often in today’s news we hear nothing but the negative about the youth in our community.  Well today we were reminded about the significant contributions that our youth can and do make.  It was noted by Bishop McDevitt Senior Michael Solomon “together we make a difference”.  The YCDT or Youth Community Development Team is a Rotary Club project that began as a Centennial project by the Harrisburg Rotary Club.  Comprised of 35 students from Harrisburg Sci-Tech High School, John Harris High School and Bishop McDevitt High School, over a nine-month period, the YCDT students participate in workshops designed to teach them how to work across neighborhood boundaries and cultural divides.  Four of these incredible students gave short presentations to the Rotary Club: from Sci-Tech High, Della Payne and Solomon Reed; and, from Bishop McDevitt, Michael Solomon and Patrick Kennedy from Bishop McDevitt.  One of the missions of the YCDT is to award a $6,000 grant to a community organization that fills a crucial need of the community, which need is identified by the YCDT.  Originally, the YCDT identified five different issues that the students felt lacking in the Harrisburg community:  health, homelessness, hunger, violence and employment.  The students decided that while all are important, employment encompassed all of these topics because if unemployment was lowered, the other issues would be likewise addressed.
In today’s world, a vast number of previously employed individuals suffered layoffs and joblessness and, thereby, economic hardships.  During such tough economic times, the students felt that it would be worthwhile to provide a grant to a community organization that worked to provide services to assist individuals to obtain gainful employment.  Noting that:  “If you a man a fish, he will eat for a day, if you teach a man to fish, he will eat for a lifetime,” YCDT worked find a community organization that taught a skill to individuals which would those individuals in gaining employment.

Out of the four applicants, YCDT chose Channels Food Rescue. Channels Food Rescue has a program where it teaches individuals how to cook and then it donates the food made by those trainees. Before deciding between the four organizations, the students subjected each to a tough interview, focusing on the end results of the training program.  The students demanded to know whether these programs had a proven record of producing individuals that obtained and retained gainful employment.
Following the presentation, Rotarians asked the students a number of questions about their participation in YCDT.  It is truly amazing to see how well-spoken each of these young men were and there is no doubt that each will achieve much.  We wish them well in their futures.
The next meeting is at 333 Market Street and the meeting on May 3rd is at Harrisburg University.  Please RSVP to Linda if you will be attending one of these meetings.
