Minutes by Karen Paris:
PRESIDENT Carrie called the meeting to order and Jean Beatty led the singing of "America the Beautiful" (Jean - thanks for the handouts - we needed help on that second verse!!). This was followed by Doug Pieper who gave a moving invocation.

At some point, Bill Miller noted in private conversation that July was Literary Month in Rotary; I’m not sure if that was due to a plethora of old "Roundups" in his mail box, or if he’s been reading his Rotary Magazine and is just catching up. So, if you missed July’s literary orientation like he did, Bill will be sponsoring a literary event - a review and comparison of "The Bourne Ultimatum" book by Ludlum to the newly-released movie. Call Bill for details.

Marie Lick introduced our Visiting Rotarians (none) and guests. Thank you Albert Schmidt for bringing a guest for us to welcome!!!

Jim Miller gave the "Rotary Moment". Jim actually referred to it as a one-minute blurb. I was kind of wondering if a blurb and a blog are at all related, and if so, should we do a one-minute Rotary Blog at each meeting. (Never mind - there’s no computer with internet at the meeting... and no, this is not a suggestion to set one up, Kent). Jim reminded us that as Rotarians we should help to 1) increase the membership base, 2) participate in service projects that benefit local/world communities, 3) support RI’s foundation and 4) develop leadership beyond our club level. Jim most correctly likened B. Hall and B. Hostetter to a "rat pack" - what kind of heat have you taken for that since the meeting, Jim? And finally, he reminded us "every Rotarian, every year."

Carrie is buying an egg timer or will bring the one in from home that’s sitting on the shelf so we don’t overcook the eggs.

John Smither asked for a fourth year of support for the "Wounded Warrior" project. We have had a steady decrease in numbers of Rotarians supporting this project from 141 to 107 over the years. Last year we gave $2984. Think how much more it could be if everyone dug a measly $10 from their pockets right now for such a worthy cause! John noted that he personalized EACH letter to the Rotarian - now don’t you think John’s doing that alone is worth the $10 tax-deductible gift??? Let’s at least get our numbers up to 175!

DJ (our Rotaract specialist and ex-exchange student) described his Rotaract Club and its activities. He is the President of the Club and his overall goal is to provide service and spread information on Rotary. His club does fundraisers (BBQ and candy), helps to collect old computers, plants trees, collects books, and other worthwhile projects. What a great way to give back now that RI has afforded him the opportunity of being part of its exchange program. Nice job, DJ!

Terry Barnaby and Ron Guss double-teamed us with a hearty thank you to Carolyn Dumaresq for her hosting our student last year and then made a plea for families for this year. This is THE month our student arrives so don’t be putting this decision on your wait-to-do list. You can ignore the fact that Rebuck is the counselor for the student; he promises he won’t interfere with your job as a host family, don’t you Andy?????

Bob Hostetter introduced our speaker, President Judge Rich Lewis, saying that he is on the "most wanted" list in Dauphin County (wrong person, Bob - that’s the list you’re on...). Judge Lewis started out with a couple of jokes but I think he needs some practice at it - I don’t think you get to tell many from the bench do you, Mr. Lewis? I am personally volunteering to be your mentor in that area, sir. Judge Lewis spoke about the law, the roles of the various participants in the court system, what an "activist" judge is (not), and noted that judges always have a 50% approval rating (his best joke). He spoke about his own opinion of those on tv who "play" judge and how they can be rude, saying that gives the profession a "bad rap". He explained the Shakespearian phrase "kill all the lawyers" from Henri VI., saying it means "kill the truth". Then, somehow, we ended up hearing fictional judgements re: condoms, criminals who won suits after being caught in garages, and a clarification on the infamous McDonald’s suit for serving scalding coffee. He said the jury wanted to send a message since the woman had asked originally only to have her medical bills covered ($11,000). The final settlement was $2,800,000 against McDonald’s, which represents two days of sales. Finally, Judge Lewis spoke about our local (Dauphin County) courts system, noting that this area is similar to York and Lancaster in the number of cases annually, but has only 1⁄2 the judges. There is a bill in the Legislature now to rectify that - he gave no odds on it passing. Judge Lewis closed with the statement that the US Court system is the best in the world and provides access to justice in a fair and impartial manner. At the end of his presentation, he answered several questions from the audience.

Carrie invited all to attend Al Baker’s house on 8/23 from 5:30 PM til 7:30 PM, noting it’s a lovely setting in the woods and that Al puts on a nice party.

At the end of the meeting Carrie sent us out with a caveat to stay on the "straight and narrow", noting that next week’s meeting will be in the same time at the same place.
