Homeless Initiatives Committee: It had come to the attention of the Rotary Club of Harrisburg's leadership, that one of the pervasive issues that the City of Harrisburg faces, that of homelessness, does not receive much attention from the Harrisburg business community.  Since our club is an important representation of the local business community and is dedicated serving the needs of the City of Harrisburg, a new committee, the Homelessness Initiative was created this year.  Our goal is to provide our members with ongoing opportunities to learn about Harrisburg's homelessness issues first hand and at the same time, provide regular service opportunities for our members.  On August 15, Corinne Rebinski and Chuck Wingate, will briefly introduce this concept to the membership and will have Julie Hoskins, director of the YWCA Housing and Homelessness Services, introduce our first service project in conjunction with the Capital Area Coalition on Homelessness "Project Homeless Connect," which takes place on Friday, September 16th at the Farm Show building.

The Year in Review is on the information table and on our website.

LAST ROTARY MEETING:  8/1/11
Minutes by Peter Henninger:
President Bob called the meeting to order at approximately 12:15 p.m. and thanked Norma Swain for our lovely dinner music.  Howard Ross provided the invocation and Tom Peluso led us in America The Beautiful, followed up by the Pledge of Allegiance.

Tom Bream then introduced various members of our Club, including Maria Persico, Ira Packman, Tom Peluso, Jen Doyle, Karen Snider, Jeff Boswell, Bob Saline, Jayne Abrams, and David Morrison, who introduced their visitors.  Tom then recognized two visiting Rotarians, Jim Stanton from Philadelphia, and Hector Ortiz from The Harrisburg Keystone Club, one of our Assistant District Governors.

Hava Pell then gave her mini-classification speech, informing the club that she was a native of Allentown area, that she grew up in a politically active family, that her father was a Rotarian and that as a very young girl, her parents instilled in her that she needed to give time when she had time and to give money when she had money.  Hava noted that she had been a congregational Rabbi for many years and had given that up after an illness, and that she is now with the Massachusetts Mutual as a financial planner working mainly with gay and lesbian couples.

President Bob then noted that there would be three committee meetings after the conclusion of the regular meeting and then introduced Bob Hostetter, who introduced our speaker, Dr. John J. Sygielski, President of Harrisburg Area Community College, the seventh person to hold that position since the formation of HACC.

The Doctor stated that his program would be Listening, Learning, Leading: My Approach To HACC Presidency.

The President noted that he had only been on the job for three weeks and that he was in the process of meeting with business leaders throughout the area and has noted early on, the feeling that getting college more into the high school level would provide a greater possibility of transferring opportunities to four-year colleges and universities at a younger age. The President noted that the challenges for HACC are chiefly two:
1.  demographics are changing and how does the community college address  this issue; and
2.  the need for innovation in order to continue the educational entrepreneurial process that it is.

He noted that he is listening to the sponsoring school districts and that HACC facilities are spread out throughout the area and somewhat surprisingly, noted that 35% of the students of HACC are doing remedial work.  Dr. Sygielski then opened up the floor for general discussion asking for comments from the membership as to what HACC can do or needs to do to better serve the community.

All in all, an excellent program which left most, if not all members, with the feeling that HACC is in a good position to continue to serve the area for many years to come.

President Bob then repeated that there would be no meeting on August 8, but that on August 15th Major Ed Shank would be the program. The meeting then concluded on time.
