PROGRAM:
Lukas Kebschull came from Bielefeld, Germany. Lukas will speak to the Club about his Rotary Exchange Student Year a few days before returning to Germany to resume his high school education there.  Lukas was an outstanding Ambassador for his country and Rotary during his Exchange Year in Harrisburg.  He will be leaving with many fond memories and will be missed.  Please attend this meeting to say good-bye to Lukas. SSA Traveling Troubadours- Richard Roberson

“A MID-SUMMER DELIGHT:  Several Students From the State Street Academy Will Delight You with Their Music!” You will be enchanted with their refreshing music and you will be apprised of this energetic and highly respected new initiative in our city!  Pianist and composer Richard Roberson serves as dean of the School of the Arts at Messiah College, where he oversees the Departments of Music, Theatre, and the Visual Arts. As a pianist, up-coming performances include a Berlin recital with bass-baritone Damian Savarino, and the Chamber Music in Grantham festival.  Also a composer, recent works include Fanfare for an Uncommon President for brass, the choral And the Word, and Night Visions for clarinet and piano. Dr. Roberson is a native of Dallas, Texas, and a graduate of the schools of music of Indiana University and the University of North Texas, where his principal teachers were Hans Graf, Walter Robert, Larry Walz, and Bernhard Heiden.

NEWS AND NOTES:
The Fellowship Committee invites all members and their guests to attend our “Nine and Dine” events in 2010.  Once a month, at a different venue each month, we will play nine holes of golf and have a chance to grab a bite to eat and a cold drink.  In order to plan ahead and accommodate attendance every month we ask that you sign up either for the golf and dine package or either golf only or dine only.  In other words there will be a sign up sheet each month.  (You certainly can play golf with a preplanned group or ask to be grouped by the host of each event.)  This is not a fundraiser for the club-it is a fellowship event-but you will need to budget to pay the announced fees for the golf and food.  You will also receive a make up for attendance! Our August event is set for Friday August 27th at Dauphin Highlands Golf Course.  Tee times will start around 5:30 and the cost to play, ride and eat is only $25. Please plan to kick off this final weekend in August with fellow Rotarians and your guests at this super golf venue.  Sign up today and see you on the first tee on Friday night August 27th!

2010-11 Rosters are now available. Pick yours up at a Rotary meeting.  Additional Rosters are $3.  Special thanks to our advertisers:  Homeland Hospice, Edward Jones, Edward L. Heim Company, Last Paige Consulting LLC, PMI Property Management Inc, Leadership Harrisburg and Goodwill.

• HACC is now in its fifth year of hosting International Business students from Minerva Business College in Randers, Denmark. Students will be accompanied by their faculty and will spend two weeks on campus studying, touring area businesses and landmarks, and meeting with business, industry and government representatives. The College has volunteered to assist in identifying host families for the 27 students, and I ask you to consider this wonderful opportunity. Students range in ages 16 through 21, and all are fluent in English. Students will arrive on Campus on Wednesday, September 15th, and depart on Wednesday, September 29th. While weekday transportation of the students to and from the College by the host family is preferred, it should not be a deterrent to hosting a student, as the Minerva faculty will have a van to assist with transportation needs. The students start most of their days at HACC at 9:00 AM, and are free to leave between 3:30 and 4:00 PM. They are available during the evenings and weekends to participate in activities with you and your friends and family. We hope you will consider hosting a student for this short period of time. It is an excellent way for you and your family to become acquainted with Denmark, Scandinavian culture, and build a friendship with a Danish student. Please contact Morgan Horton with any questions you may have either at 717-780-3238 or at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . If you are interested in hosting a student she will send you a link to view their profiles.

ATTENDANCE:

LAST ROTARY MEETING:  7/26/10      55 %
Rotarians  75    Active Specials    7         Guests   16         Visiting Rotarians   0   =   98

Minutes by: Peter Henninger
President-elect Bob called the meeting to order and introduced Caryn Carr who led the club in singing God Bless America.  John Cavanaugh then provided the invocation.  After recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance we greeted each other and guests.  After we finished lunch Jeannette Archer introduced our guests and visiting Rotarians.  Of special note former exchange student Ange, spelled A  N  G  E updated our club on the events in his life since completing his stint as our Rotary Exchange student.  It was great to see him again.
Ginny Roth and Jewel Cooper (good to see Jewel again!) introduced members of Al Baker’s staff at PIBH along with Al’s wife Joan and daughter Carrie and then read an emotional resolution honoring Al and detailing his significant contributions serving his country in Viet Nam and the Middle East, his leadership as President and CEO of PIBH and his great service and leadership to our Rotary Club.
Andy Rebuck then reported on this week’s and future Nine and Dine events.
Jeanette Archer-Simons then worked the crowd for good news reporting leading into Bonnie McCann who introduced our program for the day, a presentation by Nicole Borda and new member Ryan Riley detailing the organization, expansion and service to the community provided by the Harrisburg Young Professionals.  This organization founded in 1998 by a group of friends who decided to do something about the lack of opportunities for young professionals in the city of Harrisburg and surrounding communities.  The initial focus, which continues to this day was to encourage the location of residents and businesses in the city of Harrisburg and making the city a better place to live, work and play.  The idea was to somehow reverse the “brain drain” that was occurring in our region and specifically the city by encouraging people to stay or to come back. Through their extensive lists of events and programming, through civic partnerships membership is now at 850 and heading to 1000!  Nichole detailed civic beautification projects, partnerships with Harrisburg University and the passport program which provides discounts to members at other city businesses.  She and Ryan also detailed the explosive growth in their sporting activities, the annual home tours the $1000 incentives for new homeowners and Harrisburg hosting the statewide impact conference which involves, among other things leadership development and social networking.  As they move towards 1000 members they are in the process of hiring an executive director to manage all the activities and programs developed over the past 12 years.  All of this in furtherance of their Mission - Developing and retaining young leaders.  An excellent program needless to say.
The meeting closed with the recitation of the Rotary Four way test.
