PROGRAM:Michael Barton, Professor of American Studies & Social Science at Penn State Harrisburg, received his Ph.D. in American Civilization at the University of Pennsylvania.  He has taught at Penn State for nearly four decades, where he is also Director of the Center for Pennsylvania Culture Studies.  His teaching and research deal with the experiences of Civil War soldiers, the history of Harrisburg PA, and the development of the American national character.
His Civil War books include Goodmen: The Character of Civil War Soldiers; and, edited with Prof. Larry Logue, The Civil War Soldier and The Civil War Veteran. Recently he edited with his students the history of the 209th Pennsylvania infantry regiment and the Civil War memoir of Sgt. Christian Lenker of Schuylkill Haven PA.
Barton’s Harrisburg histories are Life by the Moving Road: An Illustrated History of Greater Harrisburg, now in its 3rd edition; Harrisburg’s Old Eighth Ward, co-edited with Prof. Jessica Dorman, which became the basis for “The Bloody Eighth,” an original musical; Citizen Extraordinaire:  The Diplomatic Diaries of Vance McCormick in London and Paris, 1917-1919, which he co-edited with fifty student editors; To a Harmony with Our Souls: A History of Jazz in Central Pennsylvania, a team project for which he was editor-in-chief; Steelton, a photographic history he co-wrote with his colleague, Prof. Simon Bronner; and Bellevue Park:  The First Hundred Years, co-writtenwith residents of that neighborhood.  He has helped re-establish the Harrisburg City Archives, and also helped manage “Living Legacy,” a large-scale oral history project to celebrate the city’s 150th anniversary.  The Harrisburg Patriot-News has named him “Top Harrisburg History Writer,” and the Pennsylvania Historical Association has appointed him to the editorial board of its academic journal Pennsylvania History.
Prof. Barton has lectured on the American national character at conferences in Scotland, Finland, Ireland, Australia, Poland, Bulgaria, Mauritania, Greece, Portugal, Canada, the Netherlands, the Republic of the Congo, the Republic of Georgia, and Denmark, where he was a Fulbright professor of American Studies at the University of Copenhagen.

NEWS AND NOTES:
The Youth Exchange Committee invites all members and their families to the welcoming picnic for Javier Molina Minaya from Spain.  Wednesday, August 25th at 6:15 PM at the Pavilion at Seibert Park in Camp Hill. Please RSVP by August 22nd.

• Program Committee: We have been successful in order to recruit candidate Corbett to speak to the club, that we join the PA Press Club meeting in the Hilton on October 25. We will have lunch separately in the ballroom, immediately after lunch (ours and theirs) the room divider will be pulled back and Corbett will speak to the joint clubs! We are currently taking every effort possible to recruit Onarato, Sestak and Toomey.  Stand by with updates as to which candidates will accept our invitation.

Fellowship Committee invites all members and their guests to attend our “Nine and Dine” events in 2010.  Once a month, at a different venue each month, we will play nine holes of golf and have a chance to grab a bite to eat and a cold drink.  In order to plan ahead and accommodate attendance every month we ask that you sign up either for the golf and dine package or either golf only or dine only.  In other words there will be a sign up sheet each month.  (You certainly can play golf with a preplanned group or ask to be grouped by the host of each event.)  This is not a fundraiser for the club-it is a fellowship event-but you will need to budget to pay the announced fees for the golf and food.  You will also receive a make up for attendance! We have enjoyed four Nine and Dine events these past four months with more than 75 Rotarians and guests coming out once a month to enjoy nine holes of golf and the chance to grab a bite to eat.

Four!  Yes, we have four more Nine and Dine events in 2010 for you to put on your calendars.

Friday August 27th - Dauphin Highlands just off PA 283 near Turnpike interchange
Tuesday September 21st - Range End GC in Dillsburg
Tuesday October 26th - Mayapple Golf Course outside of Carlisle

Our November date is still pending but we will secure the venue and date soon for you to add to your calendars.  All Rotarians and guests are invited to tee it high at the end of a work day and enjoy some great golf, great food and great company.

See you on the first tee,
Fellowship Committee

If August were an acronym what would it stand for and how might it relate to the Rotary Club of Harrisburg meeting on Monday August 9, 2010?

“A” might stand for amazing as our club members are certainly that when they meet, greet and kick off a meeting with warmth and gusto.

“U” might stand for unforgettable as in an apt description for our new member, Jayne Abrams and her mini classification talk.  If you missed this personable chat, make sure to ask Jayne about her concern with the left and the right entrances at catholic school.

“G” might stand for great as Connie Siegel kicked off the first of a series of “membership minutes” that will highlight our veteran membership.  This scribe was scribbling notes about Brook Trout, Polio Plus, single-member classifications, Redondo Beach and much more as Connie took us on his Rotary trip so far and finished with his message that “Rotary has done great things in my life and hope it will do the same in yours.”

“U” might stand for ubiquitous as today we met our District Governor-Will Kirkpatrick who might best be described ad ubiquitous since he is logging the miles to visit the 50 clubs and some 2500 members in District #7390!  In his big, bold voice Will took some time today to go through the “nuts and bolts” of the many projects spearheaded in our District.

“S” might stand for super as it is always a highlight to hear three new members introduced to our club by their respective proposers.  Please give a warm welcome to Pam Nelson, Ryan Riley and Christopher Bickel and a big thank you to Janice, Jewel and Ginny as well.  (Please also add a high-five to Rotarian Lewis as he celebrated his 6 month anniversary.)

“T” might stand for travel as President John mentioned that our club will host a Russian adult exchange group in early 2011 and host families will be needed for one week and he noted that a group is looking for volunteers to build homes in Haiti week of September 18 with only $1000 budget needed for airfare, lodging and meals.  (“T” might also stand for tardy as the clock was squarely on 12:25 when suntanned Mitch Tillett strolled in the door.)

AUGUST—it might stand for Another, Unbelievably Great, Upbeat, Spectacular Treat of a meeting with Rotarians in the #23 club in all the world on a hot day in Harrisburg, PA!
