NEWS AND NOTES:

  • Volunteers Needed for a one (1) week trip to Biloxi, Mississippi to help rebuild - Sunday through Saturday, September 30th - October 6th, 2007
This trip focuses on one thing: you and your help. You do not need tools, special skills, or the ability to build a rocket ship. What is needed are helping hands, and people willing to commit their time and energy to help clean up an area ravaged by a hurricane. You need to arrange travel to Baltimore (car) and then to Biloxi (flight from BWI). The church will pick up volunteers from the airport and provide food and lodging. Costs for the trip are minimal: your travel and airfare (about $180 r/t) and $20/day for lodging in the church. Your reward is knowing that you have invested in a community working to rebuild, and that you have helped a community grow stronger.

Minutes by Andy Rebuck:

Are you an animal lover? Do you have a pet dog, cat or other animal who has become a true family member? If yes, then you would have really enjoyed today’s meeting of the Rotary Club of Harrisburg.

First, let me back up a bit here. It was raining cats and dogs this afternoon, but our meeting attendees sure seemed to be in a “sunny” mood. Perhaps this started with the more than twenty, first-year Rotarians meeting in the corner of the room prior to the noon start led by Pattie Hindermyer. Perhaps it was the eleven guests our membership invited today that had our group running on high energy.

It may remain a mystery to this scribe why our club was flying at warp speed, but nonetheless it needs to be reported that in fact, President Carrie rang the bell at 12:14 sharp, Rotarian Caryn Carr led us in song and Al Schmidt offered the invocation. “Soccer Referee” Steve Feinour (I bet you didn’t know that about Steve) then introduced our ten Rotarians who brought guest today, including our French exchange student, Ange and his host “mother”.

Certainly our meeting was running like a well-trained dog when Rotarian Judson did indeed take one minute on a “Rotary Minute” presentation where he highlighted the value of wonderful international initiatives and Rotarian Andy Hetrick did indeed take three minutes for his three minute mini-classification presentation! We did learn from Andy that he is a native of Harrisburg , a long time bank employee with M&T bank and the proud father of an 8 and a 10 year old.

This meeting was not going to the dogs, no far from it as our very own, Karen Snider introduced today’s speaker, Amy Kaunas, Esq. Amy is the Executive Director of the Humane Society and she brought her “partner” with her today, Dartanion.

Amy is new to this post, but she has a long history of passion for animals and that became quite evident to our club members throughout her presentation. We learned that the Humane Society has been serving greater Harrisburg since 1911 and that there are 36 employees deploying a budget of nearly 1.5 million dollars to care for our pets and animals.

There was no need to “beg” for information as Ms. Kaunas informed us on many programs offered by the Human Society: adoption, which is their largest program, the safe haven program, animal rescue program, vaccination, spay and neuter and others were all outlined with a passion and conviction for this community-supported facility.

We all left the club today with our umbrellas extended and a warm feeling for the efforts of the Humane
