• Home Building Mission in Haiti from September 18-25. For more information contact President John Judson. • Fellowship Committee invites all members and their guests to attend our “Nine and Dine” events in 2010. Once a month, at a different venue each month, we will play nine holes of golf and have a chance to grab a bite to eat and a cold drink. In order to plan ahead and accommodate attendance every month we ask that you sign up either for the golf and dine package or either golf only or dine only. In other words there will be a sign up sheet each month. (You certainly can play golf with a preplanned group or ask to be grouped by the host of each event.) This is not a fundraiser for the club-it is a fellowship event-but you will need to budget to pay the announced fees for the golf and food. You will also receive a make up for attendance! We have enjoyed four Nine and Dine events these past four months with more than 75 Rotarians and guests coming out once a month to enjoy nine holes of golf and the chance to grab a bite to eat. Four! Yes, we have four more Nine and Dine events in 2010 for you to put on your calendars. Friday August 27th - Dauphin Highlands just off PA 283 near Turnpike interchange Our November date is still pending but we will secure the venue and date soon for you to add to your calendars. Minutes by: Karen Paris Our meeting started at 12:20 PM when President John called the meeting to order. He noted our age (23rd Club in the World and the 100th Anniversary coming up. None of the charter members were present). Joan Prescott gave a thoughtful invocation that reflected using our diverse talents to better serve our community through service above self. Then Doug Pieper led us in two verses of “America.” Sorry, Doug, most of us only know the first one. As is John’s style, the room went back to a lively “chatter”. Jacqueline Jackson-DeGarcia’s table clearly epitomized this because it was one laugh after another there. Jeff Boswell (aka Mr. Duke basketball) was in charge of greetings. He started with birthday wishes and then introduced Al’s wife Fay. Steve Feinour introduced our new, hot-off-the-plane REX (Rotary Exchange Student), Javier Minaya, who hails from a suburb of Madrid. He’s already on the soccer team at Camp Hill. Javier is very confident; he did not hesitate to introduce himself in perfect English. (Wouldn’t you like to go to Spain and speak Spanish in 6 days the way he spoke English…) He said that it’s hot and dry in the middle of the country, “not like here”, and he was somewhat self-effacing on his soccer skills. Bottom line, we’ve got a “live” one – consider inviting him to anything – I’m sure he’ll go and have a great time. Several other Rotarians also brought guests, including Joan P, Betty H, and Dan P. We had a new member introduction today. John Packer says he’s looking forward to getting involved. So, Jacqueline grabbed him for Pancakes. But I’ll bet by November he’ll be ok with another committee assignment. Carrie W-T invited us all to the Harrisburg Gallery Walk on September 12, 2010. Can’t beat the price (it’s free). Maria Persico did a Rotary minute in which she talked about how well Rotary manages crises throughout the world and is a great example of “best practices”, compared with large companies which face crises. She especially noted Rotary’s leadership in polio. Janice Black introduced Pam Nelson the Director of Development for TFEC. President John announced that our Pancake Breakfast date is: October 30, 2010. The committee’s first meeting will be August 30, 2010 following Rotary. President John, in a lei, announced that there will be a Hawaiian luau on City Island to raise money for the Pride of the Susquehanna which needs $80,000 to keep paddling. Bob Hostetter introduced our speaker, Professor Michael Barton. Professor Barton has written many books and has been a lecturer in Europe, Australia and Africa. His topic was “national character”. Put another way it can also be considered a search for meaning. He noted that patriotism is sometimes associated with the motherland or the fatherland, but not the brotherland. The professor quoted “each is like everybody, somebody and nobody else all at the same time. So let’s enjoy one another for what we are.” He compared and contrasted nationalism and patriotism, noting that 175,000 lives have been extinguished this century in the name of patriotism. In terms of national pride, the US & Venezuela lead the rankings. Australia comes in third. He feels that former colonies have more pride than mother countries do, there is a weak relationship with gender (men have more), a strong positive relationship with age, and a positive relationship with lower educational levels. President John asked the Professor’s opinion about the mosque in New York City. The professor did not share his personal feelings, but gave us a definition of patriotism to contemplate: “the last refuge of scoundrels”. He noted that we are proud of our patriotism but at the same time, we can be afraid of it. Every generation needs to have a truce on the issue. President John gave the Professor a Rotary thank you for his enlightened presentation. Announcements included the upcoming picnic at Seibert Park this Wednesday to welcome Javier Minaya. President John also noted that the format for our meetings will be changing slightly. We concluded with the Four Way Test.
