NEWS AND NOTES:
The Fellowship Committee invites all members and their guests to attend our “Nine and Dine” events in 2010.  Once a month, at a different venue each month, we will play nine holes of golf and have a chance to grab a bite to eat and a cold drink.  In order to plan ahead and accommodate attendance every month we ask that you sign up either for the golf and dine package or either golf only or dine only.  In other words there will be a sign up sheet each month.  (You certainly can play golf with a preplanned group or ask to be grouped by the host of each event.)  This is not a fundraiser for the club-it is a fellowship event-but you will need to budget to pay the announced fees for the golf and food.  You will also receive a make up for attendance! We have enjoyed four Nine and Dine events these past four months with more than 75 Rotarians and guests coming out once a month to enjoy nine holes of golf and the chance to grab a bite to eat. Four!  Yes, we have four more Nine and Dine events in 2010 for you to put on your calendars.

Friday August 27th - Dauphin Highlands just off PA 283 near the Turnpike interchange

Tuesday September 21st - Range End GC in Dillsburg

Tuesday October 26th - Mayapple Golf Course outside of Carlisle

Our November date is still pending but we will secure the venue and date soon for you to add to your calendars.  All Rotarians and guests are invited to tee it high at the end of a work day and enjoy some great golf, great food and great company.

See you on the first tee,
Fellowship Committee

Today was another day about youth, youth showing the promise for a better future.

Howard Ross provided a thoughtful invocation and John Hickey led us in singing America the Beautiful.  The meeting was rung in by President Judson at 12:30 p.m.  Barry Ramper delivered the startling news of Valerie Payne’s untimely passing this weekend.

We then turned to some lighter news – the Rotary Youth Exchange Committee led by chairpersons Peggy Grove and Caryn Carr introduced Lucas Kebscull, this past year’s youth exchange student.  Lucas was unique in that he immersed himself wholeheartedly in the sports and student culture of Susquehanna Township High School.  While attending Susquehanna Township High School for the 2009-2010 school year, Lucas lettered in Golf and Tennis.  Peggy and Caryn presented him with a varsity letter jacket from Susquehanna Township High School.  Lucas then provided us with some personal background and notable highlights for his year abroad.  One of the most interesting facts was that his year abroad didn’t count towards his education in Germany.  Rather, in Germany, only those years that are actually completed in the home country are credited.  Therefore, he must go back to Germany and redo his 12th grade year.  Germany has actually 13 years for their primary education system.  So Lucas has two (2) more years yet to go in high school.  From there, he plans to attend to college and go into computer business following in his father’s footsteps.  Lucas noted that the American schools were much more structured that the German schools and had much more school spirit.

The Rotary Youth Committee thanked Gretchen Vreeland who was Lucas’s host family for the entire year.  Peggy Grove thoughtfully presented Lucas with several of her personal pins that she has collected throughout the years.  Some of the highlights that Lucas noted from his year here and participating in Rotary events was helping to build some houses, and participating in “some pancake thing.”  Of course I had some personal amusement with that as I may now think of it as “some pancake thing”.

We were then treated to music from several of the Traveling Troubadours from the State Street Academy of Music.  SSA offers opportunities for local youth to gain education in classical, instrumental and vocal music.  Currently sitting on the Board there is our own Ginny Roth and Tom Arnoldi.  We were privileged to hear three extraordinarily talented young people perform.  Madison, age 6, played the violin wonderfully considering her age.  Similarly, Jeremiah amazed us with his piano skills at the age of 11.  Finally, but certainly not least, a lovely 16 year old young lady Joy sent chills through us all by her incredible renditions of Star Spangled Banner and Ave Maria.  She truly has a bright future ahead of her.
