Happy Holidays

PROGRAM:

TODAY is the annual HOLIDAY PROGRAM, featuring the Harrisburg High School Tour Choir, under the direction of Mr. Michael Clements.  Begin your holiday season with an enjoyable program of holiday music, a delicious lunch, and fellowship with Rotary friends.  The Harrisburg High School Tour Choir is a small vocal ensemble selected from the larger HHS Concert Choir.  They have performed extensively throughout the community including the State Capitol, the Governor's mansion, various service organizations and nursing and assisted-living facilities, and also at Strawberry Square.  They also performed at the second inauguration of Governor Ed Rendell.

The Tour Choir will be performing selections for the holiday season.

Mr. Michael Clements is assisted by Miss Allison Ortiz, student teacher from Lebanon Valley College and accompanied by Mrs. Georgia Clements.

HAPPY HANUKKAH to our Jewish members and friends (Dec. 12-19).   This is the "Festival of Lights" which celebrates the military victory over the Greeks 2000 years ago and the rededication of the destroyed Temple.  Traditions include lighting the menorah to symbolize the miracle of one night's oil burning for eight nights; Hanukkah gelt (money), latkes (potato pancakes) and dreidels (spinning tops).

MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR!

“Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way….  Come on now, everyone sing along with me…Dashing through the snow….

What?  Why am I singing when I am supposed to be scribing the notes for the Rotary Club of Harrisburg’s meeting?   Well, that question is as easy to answer as it is to eat one of my favorite holiday cookies.  I am officially filled with the holiday spirit!”   (In fact, it was suggested and unofficially voted on and approved at this reporter’s table that all Rotarians shall be encouraged to wear a holiday festive tie or garb next Monday.)

“Oh, what fun it is to ride….   What?  Oh, sure yes I can actually put down the song sheet and give my report.”  Here goes….

At exactly 12:15 Ex-President Barry rang the bell in the absence of President Carolyn, Rotarian Ross then offered the invocation, Rotarian Pieper then noted the wonderful return of our very own John Smither and led God Bless America.

Rotarian McNutt welcomed the guests of Rotarians Laughman, Detweiler and Grossman and Rotarian Cavenaugh (John, not Chris) jumped to the podium to recognize four Paul Harris awardees-Morrison, Capita, Fromer and Siegel.  (Congratulations to this fabulous foursome!)

It was 12:30 on the dot when Mr. Jingle himself-Rotarian Hurwitz thanked the club for filling every slot on the Salvation Army bell ringing volunteer list!

“Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way….  Oops I am sorry but I couldn’t help myself.”

With style, warmth and grace our very own Rotarian Ellen Kyzer then began to host the Service Above Self Awards.  “As the holidays are a time of reflection and appreciation for our blessings, it is wonderful to celebrate and honor this year’s award winners.”

Our club was first introduced to Betty Schneiderhan who donates her time and talent to the Mechanicsburg Museum Association.  We next met Juanita Edrington-Grant and learned of her efforts on behalf of the Christian Recovery Aftercare Ministry.

We did not get to meet this year’s top honoree-Larry Baker from Contact helpline because he was under the weather unfortunately.  (I can tell you from first hand experience that Larry is a genuine person who is dedicated to the success of Contact Helpline and assuredly deserving of this honor.)

Meeting adjourned and everyone off to the hustle and bustle of the season at 12:47.

Don’t forget your holiday garb next week and sign along now …dashing through the snow on a one-horse open sleigh….
