• YOUTH EXCHANGE STUDENT INFORMATION:

Dear Rotarians,

It has been a year and a half since I left the United States and I still miss it and the life I had there very much. So I just wanted to thanks all of you; the Rotarians, the host families, the school, and all the people in general who made this year the best year of my young life. It has been the most interesting, fun and opening year so far. It has changed me in many ways, I feel like a total different person now, I feel like a real adult who still has a lot to see and discover!

The 3 months after I left Harrisburg were probably the hardest ones I went through, I just wanted to come back to the life I had back to Pennsylvania.

The Rotary club is a great association, with amazing people and I hope it will remain that way for a long long time. All the people around me know the Rotary and how wonderful it is. I just keep talking about it all the time. Actually two of my friends are exchange students through the Rotary this year, one is in Equador and the other one in Texas.

About my new life,
I started college last fall and I'm loving it. I'm at the "Ecole Nationale Supérieure d'Architecture de Lyon" (the school of architecture of Lyon), I'm double majoring in architecture and engineering. I have my own apartment in the city and living on my own is pretty fun, even if I have to do all the dishes and the clean up.

I hope everything is good for you,
Thanks again for all,

Best regards,

Ange Sauvage (From France)

We returned late Thursday night from the Medical Mission to Ecuador.   We spent our last night in Ecuador with DJ (Daniello Carrera).   Thanks, Ron for the cell phone number!

DJ  asked us to say hello to all of you.  He is doing very well.  He's finishing his last year at the university and is seriously thinking about going to Finland to get his masters degree.  He is also working for the Chamber of Commerce.  They are trying to develop more business and tourism with Canada.

He also is very active in the university's Roteract club.  Please feel free to share this with Peg Grove or others who know him.

I'll send pictures when I get them sorted out.   He slimmed down about 60 pounds, but otherwise looks the same.  He also said he hears occasionally for Yim, who is now studying in Japan.

Bye for now.
Carol Nelson (Youth Exchange Mom)

Minutes by: Jacqueline Jackson-DeGarcia
If I could figure it out, I would be “tweeting” these minutes!  However, I am not yet up to “tweeting” capacity.
This meeting began promptly at 12:15 p.m. with Joan Prescott providing the invocation reminding us to continue to take care of our families and friends.  Tom Arnoldi led us in song with “God Bless America”.  Unusual, we had no guests today. Perhaps it was because if the beautiful spring-like day.  We had two (2) visiting Rotarians: one from Greensburg and an old friend returning, Pete Ostroski.
Ding, ding, ding, ding, ding!  It’s bell-ringing time!  December 15th and December 16th—please sign up for your one-hour spots, requests Hal Horowitz in his committee report.
Next, if you have not already done so, please consider giving your $100 to the Harrisburg Rotary Foundation by the end of this year, requests Barry Ramper (our past president).
Finally, one of the best programs that Rotary presents is the Student and Teacher of the Month.  John Sutliff reported that those from John Harris were unable to make it.  However, he was able to present Certificates of Recognition to teachers and students from three (3) schools.  First, from Bishop McDevitt: Joshua Yeckley, English teacher and Lauren Sigler, a senior from McDevitt who wishes to pursue a career in medicine.  Next, from SciTech High: Maria Kauffman, French teacher and Nam Phan, a student who wishes to pursue a career in medical engineering.  Finally, from William Penn: Earl Brown, a teacher, who very clearly stated that he felt that he was not singularly deserving of the recognition, but rather, he gave a “shout-out” to the other members of his teaching team and felt that it was truly a team effort and Natalie Roger, an 11th-grader who intends to focus her career in business.
Next, President Carolyn read the report provided from those in the Dominican Republic helping to set up the dental clinic, working with the Hershey Medical team.  While members of the team slave, Bob Hostetter (of course and with no doubt) kept all in stitches and Hall managed to do the supervisory/director role.
Twitter…Facebook…Gypsy…YouTube…WHAT?!?!
Kim Walsh-Phillips, president of InsideOut Creative, opened the eyes of many of us to the social networking world available through the Internet.  Her networking tool of choice is Twitter.  Twitter was launched by a single man who had the wonderful idea that he wanted to connect with others through use of the Internet.  In a few short years after incorporating a company, the usage for this particular social network grew to 9.1 million in the U.S.  While many of us were aware of the social networking tools available on the Internet, most of us were not aware of how big of a tool they could be in promoting and marketing businesses.  According to Kim, there are several companies who have made this a very effective tool, such as Zappos, WholeFoods, and JetBlue.  The ability to link all of these social networking sites was also mentioned by Kim.
Looking around the room during this presentation, I was amazed to see that most of the people were captivated yet confused and, frankly, a little scared.  Our children probably know how to work these networking sites far better than any of us do.  Maybe it’s just that we are not as technically savvy as our children, many of us having grown up in an era where the Internet did not even come into play until the mid-1990’s.  For the most part, those of us in Rotary had already completed our education by the mid-90’s and, therefore, were not schooled in the use of these Internet tools in the way that current users are.
Moreover, it did not appear that anyone in the room had thought to use the networking media for marketing his or her business.  Such use of these networking sites can be effective, but if using it to market your business, there is a definite need to monitor  its use daily if not more often.  I know I am not up to managing more than one site, but there are those who do it well, effectively, and efficiently.  Thanks, Kim, for opening our eyes…Yikes.
