Minutes by Andy Rebuck:
You wake up, it is snowing, it is cold outside and everyone, everyone is clamoring for a hot, delicious bite to eat!  So what do you do?

My best advice is to whip up some baked oatmeal!

Now I know you expect me to report on the Rotary Club of Harrisburg’s meeting on Monday February 8th but I think we can slide a wonderful baked oatmeal recipe into the report.

Don’t you agree?

Okay here are the ingredients you will need: 1 stick butter, 2/3 cup brown sugar, 2 eggs, 2 t baking powder, 1/2 cinnamon, 1 t vanilla, 1 c milk,  1/2 t salt and 3 c oatmeal (2 quick and 1 old fashioned.)  Once you assemble all the ingredients you….

Oops, first let me tell you that our club did meet on Monday and there was a buzz in the room that may indeed have been tied to the epic snowstorm over the weekend, the fabulous Super Bowl win by the Saints or perhaps the romantic thoughts over the upcoming Valentine’s Day.

President Carolyn rang the bell at 12:13, Rotarian Barden offered the invocation and Rotarian Carr led us in song.  Rotarian Bashore then jumped up and allowed introduction of guests attending with Anthony, Laughman and Johnston as well as allowing Means to introduce a member who had joined in 1955- Harry Banzhoff - who had perfect attendance at our club for more than 25 years!

Taking two minutes of the three minute classification speech, Rotarian Jeff Goldsmith, outlined his role as an investment specialist and explained how his value lies in difficult times when he helps clients focus on the long term.

Big news came to the podium as Past President Barry introduced the slate of officers for 2010-2011 and with a drum roll and blaring of trumpets we all learned that our very own Una Martone was nominated to jump into the VP seat and line up to take the President’s gavel in 2012-13.

Speaking of Presidents, our President Elect, John Judson handled the pinning of our newest members - Jeff Haas, Kevin McNamara and Mark Lewis.  On behalf of this scribe, welcome to the club!

Now where were we with that recipe?  Yes, mix the ingredients together, place in oven proof baking dish (8x8 is thicker or 9x9 for thinner) and place in fridge overnight.  (You can double the recipe and make a 9x13 batch.)  Bake in oven at 350 degrees for 30 minutes.  Slice and serve in a bowl with milk!  One more secret and then you are set for your next cold, snowy day.  We love fruit in the mixture and often add 1 ½ cups of frozen blueberries-the small ones.  You can simply add pumpkin, peaches or apple and even add some cinnamon or nutmeg.  Delicious and nutritious!

It was exactly 12:45 and the one of a kind Bob Hostetter took to the podium to welcome today’s speaker noting that indeed “club members had come to hear the introduction-not the speech!”

We were treated to a superb presentation from the Editor and Publisher of the Patriot News.  Yes, John Kirkpatrick did an awesome job walking us through the changing role of a daily newspaper!  We learned in Central Pa the paper is a valued service that despite tough times and changes in media usage is a strong and lasting product.

John noted that the paper had lessened its geographic distribution to focus on its core market.  At the same time it had introduced a new product on Friday’s that eventually may become independent local newspapers.  He also noted the push of the company to broaden several products such as Penn Live, a regional publication and now some non-print products like video on demand.

Our club members were in for a treat as John really painted a clear picture of the Patriot present and the possible future.  It was also clear when he finished that our membership loves the Patriot and was encouraged to hear John report that our communities still care about what goes on and that they look to the Patriot for their news.
