UPCOMING PROGRAMS / MEETING LOCATIONS:
February 2 Nancy Dering Martin
Hilton Nancy has been a student of organizations and the people in them for over thirty years. She is fascinated by human enterprise and the extraordinary differences among organizations, their cultures, their leaders, their norms and their results.
She is still asking the age-old “why” questions:
“Why do some organizations thrive, even in the face of obstacles, and others do not?
“Why are some organizations healthy and others, dysfunctional?
“Why is making change so different from one organization to the next?
“Why is it so difficult for some people inside an organization to see what’s going on?
“Why is it so difficult for some people inside an organization to admit what’s going on?
“Why is it so difficult for some people inside an organization to address what’s going on?
Nancy has been asked to share her observations about these timeless questions. Looking back over three decades of experience with the public, private and nonprofit sectors, she will distill her real life observations and share her not-so-textbook-answers about what makes organizations and the people in them tick.
Our noted speaker will address: “Quick! Describe your organization in three words: Observations, Thoughts, and other Musings about Organizations and the People in them.”

Wayman Tisdale - Smooth jazz
February 5, 7:30 PM
Sunoco Performance Theater
Wayman Tisdale has made the transition to become an accomplished jazz bassist, since his retirement from the NBA at the end of the 1997 season. Emerging as one of the most consistent and admired players during his 12 years in the NBA, he is also a trailblazer in the field of music with his unique use of the bass as a melodic lead instrument.Tisdale’s latest album, Rebound, includes collaboration with Toby Keith on the song Never Gonna Give You Up. The album’s first single, Throwin’ It Down, has earned a Top 20 spot on the Smooth Jazz charts. Tisdale recently stated, "Rebound is a reflection of what has been going on. It has been one of those roads, a winding road that I have taken, and I thank God he has kept me and I am still here. I am encouraged by this CD, and the great musicians who have collaborated with me. This gives me the chance to show people I have made it, and you can make it, too."
A gifted athlete, Tisdale spent much of his youth on the basketball court when not making music. He played for the University of Oklahoma and in 1984 played on the gold-medal-winning U.S. Olympic team. He joined the Indiana Pacers in 1986 as the No. 2 draft pick. For the next 12 years, Tisdale left his mark on the NBA, scoring more than 12,800 points and pulling down more than 5,000 rebounds in a 12-year career.
Before his retirement from the NBA, Tisdale had already made the transition toward a career in music. In 1995 he released his debut CD, appropriately titled Power Forward, which went to No. 4 on Billboard’s Contemporary Jazz charts. His subsequent albums included In the Zone, Decisions, Face to Face, Hang Time and Way Up! Several of his songs became No. 1 radio hits – Can’t Hide Love and Ain’t No Stoppin’ Us Now.
Tisdale currently moves between his homes in Tulsa and Los Angeles with his wife Regina , with whom he has four children. Tisdale says that his first passion is entertainment. “I was born to entertain,” he says. “I just love people and I feel like entertainment goes right in line with my personality. Whether it’s on the stage or playing basketball, it’s just what I’ve been called to do on this earth.”

Minutes by Valerie Payne:
Al Morrison once again delighted the crowd with his adroit and masterful musical talents. To say that his piano playing is superb is an understatement. In a word, he’s marvelous!
First Year Rotarians (FYR) conducted all aspects of the meeting. At lead, FYR, John Cavanaugh, opened the meeting and gave Barry Ramper II a scare with his quick wit and smooth style. Terry Nash led us in prayer and Jessica Malone used her unique vocal prowess to unite our voices in a stirring rendition of “God Bless America.” Roger Morgenthal gave a heartfelt soliloquy on the meaning of Rotary service by delineating many of its most notable programs, including but not limited to: Youth Exchange Program, International Service, High School Programs, Rotaract, Polio Plus (2 billion children vaccinated – 500,000 cases prevented), and Friendship Exchange.
FYR David Warren deftly segued into recognition of Rotarians accompanied by guests. Rotary members bringing guests: Una Martone, Marian Alexander, Andy Rebeck, Garry Brinton, Tom Hooker, Bonnie McCam, Caryn Carr, and Bill Boles.
FYR, Joyce Libby regaled us with her background in what is the most challenging industry in today’s news, i.e. financial services. A certified financial planner, Joyce has spent seventeen (17) years advising individuals, foundation, and companies and works with EHD Advisory Services.
Committee Reports:
Carrie Wissler Thomas noted two financial donations to our Harrisburg Rotary Foundation: $1,375 from Russ Maniglia and Ellie Allen, widow of Health L. Allen (54-year Rotary member) contributed $5,400 on behalf of the family. Forty-one (41) members haven’t contributed the required $100 to the Foundation.
Youth Exchange – Ron Guss updated the group on the dire necessity for a volunteer host home for Paul. A meeting was held immediately afterwards to discuss the situation.
There was plenty of good news to go around and ran the gamut of a granddaughter finally smiling at her Pop Pop, a 30th wedding anniversary, recognition of a Rotarian’s college classmate as the only African American United States senator (Senator Roland Burris), a daughter’s engagement, and wrapped up with recognition of International Fellowship Rotary Scuba Divers.
The highlight of the luncheon was preceded by an introduction by Chad Barger of Matt Tunnell who had the privilege of hyping the crowed for our guest speaker, Doug Neidich, GreenWorks Development. Doug, a native of Steelton, captivated the audience with his genuine enthusiasm, passion, and drive for his commitment to alternative energy and urban redevelopment. We learned about “Brownfields”, LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified building and communities, SMART growth, and new urbanization designed to allow residents to live, work, learn (educational focus) and play in the same area, diminishing the amount of time spent in automobiles. With mid-town as his focus, Doug shared photos of the redesigned Evangelical Press Building, (135,000 sq. ft.) which houses all HACC’s trade and technical facilities and is now HACC’s Midtown Campus. Delightful streetscapes, esthetically attractive and safety conscious, with strategically placed lighting all contribute to defining a future for a visionary who sees urbanization as the “blueprint” for growth. An integrated geothermal system combined with solar panels in his designs gives Doug the “Bright Green Building” that he believes is the future for urban revitalization. For more detailed information on Doug’s projects, check out the Patriot News, Monday, January 26, 2009, Local and State Section.
Wrapping up what was a flawless FYR meeting orchestration, FYR John Cavanaugh presented Doug Neidich with a CD from our own legendary instrumentalist, Al Morrison. The meeting ended with members reciting the Rotarian’s 4-Way Test: Is it the TRUTH? Is it FAIR to all concerned? Will it build GOODWILL and better FRIENDSHIPS? Will it be Beneficial to all concerned?
