NEWS AND NOTES:
• Congratulations: Marion Alexander - 2008 YWCA Legacy Award
• Ambassadorial Scholarships Sought for 2009-2010
Applications for the 2009-2010 Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarships are now available from Rotary District 7390. Our club deadline is May 1, 2008. Required, in-person interviews will be held Saturday, June 21, 2008 at the Wyndham Garden Hotel, Harrisburg, PA. For further information and to print an application, go to The Rotary Foundation (Foundation Educational Grants) section at http://www.rotary.org/foundation/programs.html (click on Ambassadorial Scholarships, application in download).
The scholarships, which are designed to further international understanding and goodwill, provide for study abroad for one year in one of the 162 countries and 35 geographical regions where Rotary clubs are located. Some 1,200 scholarships will be available from clubs worldwide.
Academic-Year Ambassadorial Scholarships are for one academic year abroad and provide funding for round-trip transportation, tuition and fees, room, board, necessary educational supplies, and language training (if necessary) up to a maximum award of US $23,000 or its equivalent.
During their studies abroad, Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholars act as "ambassadors of goodwill." Through appearances before Rotary clubs and districts, schools, civic organizations, and other forums, the scholars represent their homelands and work to further international understanding.
NOTE: District 7390 offers one, one-year Academic Ambassadorial Scholarship each year.
• JOINING HANDS Rebuilding after Katrina
The Club is joining hands with the District to rebuilt homes and lives after Katrina devastation. Five members of the Club are planning to fly to Biloxi, MS to join with others to rebuild homes. Another member has contributed toward the cost of construction materials.
The program calls for those volunteering to fly to Biloxi on a Sunday where local volunteers meet them. Meals and housing will be “dormitory style” in the fellowship hall of a local Lutheran Church. Volunteers are asked to provide their own airfare (about $265 from Baltimore) and $20/day for food and housing expenses. Some members are considering flying down privately. The local arrangements committee provides tools and transportation to the work site.
The construction work varies from week to week. January will involved general construction. February will involve drywall, taping, spackling, orange peel spray coating, and insulation. March will need interior finishing: painting, installing cabinets and fixtures, trim, doors and flooring. Also needed are people to prepare meals and provide clerical and administrative support. People with all levels of skill are needed.
The World Fellowship Committee and President Carrie hope that a large number from our Club can participate in this humanitarian service. You will hear more at our Club meeting Monday. Please pick up a registration form at the meeting Monday and indicate all possible weeks of service, What a plus for our club to have members working together! Applications will be on the tables and on our website: www.hbgrotary.org

LAST ROTARY MEETING: 1/28/08 67% $160 from Good News Reporting/Auction
Rotarians 98 Active Specials 14 Guests 4 Visiting Rotarians 0 = 116
Minutes by Jeff Gelburd:
First Year Rotarians had their chance to coordinate and conduct our last meeting in January, 2008.
President Tom Imholte called the meeting to order at approximately 12:15 PM to a mostly full room of Rotarians in the Second Floor Ballroom at the Harrisburg Hilton.
Invocation was performed by Chuck Wingate.
Rotary Minute was conducted jointly by Donna Clark and Betty Hungerford. Donna and Betty gave a very thorough presentation on the life of Paul Harris, the founder of Rotary International.
Following a very good “Lawyer” joke, Tom introduced Joe Schmidt who provided the Introduction of Visiting Rotarians and Guests.
The Mini-Classification Talk was done by Marc Scaringi.
Sam Levine auctioned off two tickets to the Central PA Jazz event coming up and also a basket of Girl Scout Cookies.
Tom Conners spoke briefly on the Biloxi effort.
Good News Reporting was conducted by Guy Patterson.
The Pancake Breakfast Committee reported on their final fund raising results. Jacqueline Bedard, Karen Paris, Garry Brinton were involved in the check presentation of $18,486 to the Harrisburg School District. Additionally, $2,000 will be presented to the Rotary Scholarship Foundation.
Program:
Today’s speaker was Rev. Dr. John Betylon, chaplain in the Pennsylvania Army National Guard currently assigned to Joint Forces Headquarters, Fort Indiantown Gap. He is Senior Pastor at Trinity Methodist Church, Hummelstown, PA.
John thanked everyone in attendance for their support of our troops abroad and those at home at Walter Reed Hospital. He spoke on his personal experiences on being deployed with our soldiers in Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm and then in Afghanistan in 2003/04 and finally with the relief efforts following Hurricane Katrina.
John was the highest ranking chaplain in Kabul during his tenure there. He spoke of helping the Fins and Swedes get acquainted with Kabul when he was there and helped distribute clothing to the children there.
John was also in charge of taking soldiers to help the victims of Katrina. He remembers arriving soon after the Hurricane hit and relief efforts being disorganized. He and his soldiers first had nothing to do so he was able to give them chain saws and began helping the neighbors in Mississippi and Louisiana.
Closing:
Tom summarized the President’s Announcements and Rotarians In The News and our meeting adjourned at 1:20pm.
