PROGRAM:
Bob Bell is the Director of Pre K Counts, a $14 million dollar, 4 year, public-private initiative that facilitates local pre-kindergarten partnerships among school districts, community-based providers and early intervention. Under Mr. Bell's direction Pre K Counts provides quality supports to over 30 communities across the state to solidify partnerships and provide quality pre-kindergarten in all settings. The goal of Pre K Counts is to align pre school curriculum to Pennsylvania early learning standards, share professional development opportunities, involve parents in their child's development, and educate business, education, legislative and community leaders about the value of quality early education to their community's future. Mr. Bell is also responsible for the research component of Pre K Counts. Through a four year study, impacting over 6,000 children, by the UCLID Center at the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, Pre K Counts will identify components of local pre-kindergarten partnerships that are most successful in preparing children for school and for life.

Mr. Bell received his Masters in Education Administration from the University of Vermont. Before joining Pre K Counts Mr. Bell was Superintendent of Schools for over nine years in Epping, New Hampshire. During his tenure there he established a district-wide special education Medicaid reimbursement program and oversaw the construction of new schools and existing school expansion projects with total construction budgets in excess of $10 million dollars. He managed all aspects of a three town, collaborative school district and developed and implemented strategic planning for continuous improvement. In addition, he served as principle for over 20 years in Rutland, Vermont at Rutland Town School. Mr. Bell and his wife currently reside in Lancaster, PA.

ATTENDANCE LAST ROTARY MEETING: 1/29/07 68%
Rotarians 74 Active Specials 9 Guests 4 Visiting Rotarians 2 = 106
Good News Reporting $118

Minutes by Carrie N.W. Thomas
The Club met in the cavernous Hilton ballroom...an earlier breakfast event having expanded our usual space to gargantuan! The meeting opened at noon with Tom Arnoldi leading the group in singing "The Star-Spangled Banner" followed by the Pledge of Allegiance and an invocation by Doug Pieper. Barry Kane introduced visiting Rotarians and guests.

President Garry announced that several Rotarians had recently made the news, namely Anne Alsadek in Harrisburg Magazine as a "Mover and Shaker", and me, Carrie Wissler-Thomas, for the Art Association of Harrisburg Bal Masque, in the Patriot News. Hal Hurwitz announced at this point that he has located the whereabouts of Past President Jim Enders...he has moved to New Jersey to escape the corporate rat-race. Hal also went on to mention that he and his wife recently visited the Ava Gardner Museum, where he learned that the actress had been a Paul Harris Fellow!

The meeting took on a more serious note when President Garry introduced our speaker, none other than our own John Judson, whose topic was "Rotary International in Haiti". John began his presentation with the showing of a DVD illustrating the amazing work of Rotary International, including all the humanitarian and health services provided for developing countries, the Ambassadorial Scholarships for study abroad, Group Study Exchange, Peace Scholars, and Humantarian Grants. With matching grants individual districts can make a real difference in people's lives. The Polio Plus project was described in depth, explaining that since 1988, there has been a 98% decline in polio cases worldwide, thanks to Rotary International. Unfortunately, it was pointed out that contributions to RI have not been keeping pace with worldwide needs. "Every Rotarian, Every Year" is more than a slogan...it is a plea for all Rotarians to make an annual Rotary International Foundation contribution in order to support the efforts to shape a peaceful tomorrow for all the children of the world.

John then went on to describe in depth Rotary's projects in Haiti, of which he has been an integral part. In his 25 missions to Haiti in the past five years, John has assisted with a number of humanitarian projects. He explained that Haiti, Ethiopia, and Dominican Republic all have overcrowding , low literacy, and high infant mortality rates, illustrated by a socio-economic indicator chart. The hospital in which he has worked in Haiti serves a district of 610 square miles with a population of 300,000. Rotary International is not concerned with religion, but rather with respect for life, and the hospital in Haiti reflects this philosophy. Outside the hospital, Rotary has been concerned with addressing community health and development issues such as housing, availability of safe water through installation of wells and sand filters, and coping with the frequent natural disasters.

The Rotary Club in Porta Prince had coordinated efforts with the hospital, and a local Rotary Club then was formed nearby because of the near-impossible communication system. Our own club sent a mission to the hospital a year ago to assist with record keeping and other necessary tasks. All in all, John's informative talk enlightened our members on the extremely important and grueling work Rotary International representatives do in developing countries.

As a definite touch of " economic relief" after John's inspiring presentation, Al Baker conducted a boisterous session of Good News Reporting, with enthusiastic announcements on widely-varying topics.

The meeting concluded at 1:15 PM.
