•  JOINING HANDS   Rebuilding after Katrina
The Club is joining hands with the District to rebuilt homes and lives after Katrina devastation. Five members of the Club are planning to fly to Biloxi, MS to join with others to rebuild homes. Another member has contributed toward the cost of construction materials.

The program calls for those volunteering to fly to Biloxi on a Sunday where local volunteers meet them. Meals and housing will be “dormitory style” in the fellowship hall of a local Lutheran Church. Volunteers are asked to provide their own airfare (about $265 from Baltimore) and $20/day for food and housing expenses. Some members are considering flying down privately. The local arrangements committee provides tools and transportation to the work site.

The construction work varies from week to week. January will involved general construction. February will involve drywall, taping, spackling, orange peel spray coating, and insulation. March will need interior finishing: painting, installing cabinets and fixtures, trim, doors and flooring. Also needed are people to prepare meals and provide clerical and administrative support. People with all levels of skill are needed.

The World Fellowship Committee and President Carrie hope that a large number from our Club can participate in this humanitarian service. You will hear more at our Club meeting Monday. Please pick up a registration form at the meeting Monday and indicate all possible weeks of service, What a plus for our club to have members working  together!  Applications will be on the tables and on our website:   www.hbgrotary.org

Minutes by Tom Parker
Derek Hathaway was welcomed to Harrisburg Rotary on February 4th by a full house, including eight guests and three visiting Rotarians.  The CEO and Chairman of HARSCO Corporation, who recently announced his retirement, spoke on the topic “Educating our Youth in our Expanding World”.  When he assumed the reins of HARSCO’s leadership fifteen years ago, the company’s market capitalization was less than $500 million and its business was predominantly domestic.  Hathaway’s vision was to take HARSCO worldwide, and today the company operates in 46 countries with a market capitalization of $5 billion.  “We live in a shrinking world because of technology and communications, but we live in an expanding world because of global opportunities”, he said, and HARSCO has grown under Hathaway’s leadership by becoming a truly international company.

“The public education system in the U.S. is insular”,  reflecting the ethnocentricity of American culture.  The rest of the world perceives that we are an arrogant nation that does not attempt to understand other cultures and societies and whether this perception is accurate or not, “perception is reality”.  Hathaway fears that America ’s competitive position in the worldwide economy will diminish unless our educational system more actively promotes global thinking, appreciation for other cultures, and international communication skills.  He particularly emphasized the necessity for our public education system to promote the study of foreign languages, noting that current requirements are only introductory in nature.  He related a personal experience when he was able to communicate directly with a high-ranking Chinese official because of their mutual fluency in French, even though neither of them spoke the other one’s language.  Fundamental to Hathaway’s internationalization of HARSCO is the company’s practice of hiring young people who understand international business, sales and finance people who are multi-lingual, and attorneys who specialize in international law.

A very engaging Q&A session followed Mr. Hathaway’s presentation and there were few departures before the closing gong despite the length of the meeting.

Earlier in the meeting, John Judson presented “The Rotary Minute”, relating his recent experiences in Haiti , where he spent most of January.  “Everywhere I looked I saw Rotary”, he said – buildings and infrastructure improvements, emergency vehicles, water wells – a virtual symphony of humanitarian assistance sponsored by Rotary International.

Betty Hungerford gave her mini-classification speech, talking about her dream position as Homeland Center’s first Director of Development, a position that Homeland created in its 133rd year of existence, her dream boss – President-Elect Barry Ramper, her dream family, husband Paul, 7 children and 22 grandchildren, and her philosophy of life, “All we have is today and each day is a gift”.

Garry Brinton presented the Nominating Committee’s slate of officers for the next fiscal year, including President Barry Ramper, President-Elect Carolyn Dumaresq, and Vice President John Judson.
