Minutes by: Dave Freet
President Carolyn initially opened our first meeting of the “New Year” at 12:15 PM. We ALL enjoyed the warm reception and welcoming music of Al Morrison prior to the opening of the meeting.

Our invocation was provided by Bridget Montgomery; singing led by Tom Arnoldi (Star Spangled Banner) followed by the Pledge of Allegiance and greeting of our fellow Rotarians.

Carolyn re-opened our meeting at 12:21 PM and invited Jeff Boswell to introduce visiting Rotarians along with guests attending our meeting.

Newer Rotarian Frank Fischer provided his Mini-Classification talk. Frank is in financial services.

Past President Carrie acknowledged fellow Rotarians “in-the-news.” Recognized were: Dr. Kohn, Betty Hungerford, Hasu Shah, and Pres. Carolyn/Andy Rebuck honoring Tom Johnson for his Service to the
Community award.

Bob Hostetter introduced the day’s program: “Mission To Samana Dominican Republic.” Fellow Rotarians on the trip were: Dr. John Judson accompanied by his wife; Bob Hall; Bob Hostetter; Rich Moultrie; Peggy Grove; and dentist from Temple University Dental program – Tony Montaro.

Bob Hall led the group in discussing this most recent trip. Help received from grants by Rotary International and our Club were instrumental in making this effort successful.

Rich Moultrie noted he became interested in Rotary and membership from a visit to our Rotary Club when Bob Hall & Bob Hostetter did a presentation on a trip to stop polio. He noted how appreciative the local people are for the help given (this was his 3rd trip) and how they “take care of the dental clinic” from year to year when not in use. Its presence is well known and observed dental hygiene has dramatically improved in this short time. Rotary’s efforts have provided help, which creates hope for these impoverished people.

Peggy Grove brought order from chaos, according to Bob Hostetter when he introduced her. She was dedicated to serving those in need. It was her 1st trip, but 3rd Rotary Mission. She helped schedule some 250 patients for dental clinic treatment. Rotary Foundation contributions helped to make a “real” difference.

Dr. John Judson noted he as visited this same clinic (previously a health clinic prior to more recently becoming a dental clinic as well). This trip demonstrated Rotary’s commitment has made a difference. In the Dominican, Rotary is a powerful force in providing water purification, in addition to health treatment and now dental health. He has appreciated seeing what has been accomplished in the recent five (5) years and the people of the village now have much improved health care.

Dr. Tony Montaro (the dentist from Temple University Dental School) spoke. He noted he couldn’t have served nearly as many folks in the dental clinic without the tremendous help from members of Harrisburg Rotary and their dedication. They treated more individuals than ever before. He appreciated the medical facilities available in the clinic, provided by

Rotary, to treat the local people. It has made a huge positive impact and he appreciates the opportunity to help the people of the Dominican Republic.

Bob Hostetter rapped up the comments. He noted this was his 4th visit to the Clinic. The work is demanding/uplifting/tiring/intense. For him, it is difficult to observe the over- whelming poverty and its impact on the young people trapped in the country’s poverty. Seeing the poverty changes those who go to serve and he encourages all to help by supporting the effort by making their contribution to the  “Rotary Foundation.” Bob thanked all in Harrisburg Rotary who support this effort and the positive assistance provided people in need!

You missed an inspiring meeting, if you were not in Attendance for our 1st meeting of 2010. Consider signing up to go on the next trip! You’ll be glad you did, and remember our motto – “Service above Self!”
