PROGRAM: Linda D. Thompson was sworn in as Harrisburg’s 33rd mayor on January 4, 2010.  She took office as the Capital City’s first African American and female Mayor.

Mayor Thompson served as Harrisburg’s City Council President since November 2008. She was first elected to City Council in 2002. She is an elected official at large and served on Council from 2004 to 2010.  She also served as Council Vice-President from 2004 to 2006. She chaired the Council’s Economic Development committee where she dedicated herself to developing areas of alternative means to economic development, securing decent affordable housing for low to moderate income citizens, and implementing programs geared toward workforce and youth development.  She recommended approval of legislation continuing the city’s development totaling $1.4 billion in new revenue, expanding the City’s tax base and revitalizing the City’s neighborhoods.

Both as Council member and Mayor, Mayor Thompson promotes legislative and policy initiatives that improve people's lives including: safe streets, quality public schools, and neighborhoods that are strong, vibrant and engaged.  Her unifying theme, “People are more important than policy, politics, and procedures,” is demonstrative of her core values.

Mayor Thompson’s career and community interest have been dedicated and focused on ensuring equity in the quality of life for all community residents. She is the author of the “Leave No Senior Citizen Behind Property Tax Relief Program,” an initiative designed to assist senior citizens in meeting their property tax obligations to ensure they can remain in their homes.  She also authored the “Opportunities Unlimited” program which provided youth, ages 14-21, with basic computer training and the guidance and support of case managers.

Mayor Thompson is a Harrisburg native.  She is a 1985 graduate of Howard University in Washington D.C. where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Communication with a minor in Political Science.  She is also a graduate of Leadership Harrisburg.

President John opened our first meeting in the new year at 12:15 P.M. Dick Stewart led us in an invocation and Doug Pieper with Norma Swain on piano led us in "America the Beautiful". We then pledged our flag and greeted each other.

At 12:30, President John asked Betty Hungerford to present a membership committee report to the club. Betty challenged each of us to reflect on all the benefits that our membership in Harrisburg Rotary affords each of us.  She challenged each of us to consider people that we know through our places of work, associations, churches, etc., that could be potential members and invite then to our weekly meeting.

Carolyn Dumaresq brought her daughter and a former Rotary exchange student from Brazil, Felipe Marie.  Felipe informed the club that he has completed law school in Brazil and is now a practicing attorney in that country.

Mini Classification talk by John Packer.  John is a life long Central Pennsylvania native. He is a Penn State graduate and has been a Certified Public Accountant for more than thirty years. A year ago he formed Insight Partners, a firm that does project based and outsourced services to local companies. John and his wife Patty are the parents of three grown children. Welcome to Harrisburg Rotary, John.

Program:
Arthur Murray Dance Studios of Central Pennsylvania (Lemoyne).  The Lemoyne franchise of Arthur Murray will soon celebrate one hundred years of service to the central Pennsylvania community. The studio provides both private lessons and group lessons. We were delighted to have with us Anna, Justin, Elaine, and Benjamin from Arthur Murray.  The Hilton was able to accommodate us with an actual dance floor within the middle of the ballroom.  The dancers introduced us to the Hustle, Waltz, Swing, Rumba, Fox Trot and Cha Cha with the appropriate music to accompany each dance. After watching the professionals, it was the rotary clubs turn to take the floor.  The brave souls of Jewel Cooper, Matt Lane, Una Martone, Bob Hostetter, Jack Detweiler, Bonnie McCann, Robin Scaer, and Bridget Whitley joined the Arthur Murray professionals in learning a few basic steps.

Our next meeting will be on Monday, January 10th at the Hilton when our guest speaker with be Mayor Linda D. Thompson.
