Thanks for your inquiries about relief in Haiti.  All of the usual organizations, Red Cross, Oxfam, Catholic Relief etc. are on the ground and doing good work.  I do not have much direct knowledge about any of them but know a lot about Hospital Albert Schweitzer (HAS) where I usually work in Haiti.  It is about 50 miles from Port au Prince (PAP) and had no significant damage. It is and has always been relatively self sufficient due to the poor infrastructure in Haiti with three diesel generators for electricity and a community size water tower.  E-mail by satellite has kept me in touch.  They are supported by the Grant Foundation, a regular 501c3 in Pittsburgh - so named because of the co-founder's maiden name.  The Grant Foundation has no other work but to support HAS.  Under normal circumstances, donations to the foundation cover 90% of the cost of all medical care.  Since HAS is now one of the few (3 at most) functional hospitals in Haiti and the only one reachable from PAP, they are now inundated with patients.  Injured people are coming by truck and car at an alarming rate. None have any resources - hence the 90% has now become 100%.  The halls and floors are filled. People are camped around the front entrance.  The hospital budget is always strained but now has become impossible due to needs for additional supplies, overtime pay, and additional workers.  Their work can be seen better on their web site www.hashaiti.org where there is also information on donations.  Their address is Hospital Albert Schweitzer/Grant Foundation; P.O. Box 81046; Pittsburgh, PA 15217. If donations are sent to HAS, donors will know exactly where the money is going and will get follow up when I am there next month.  Checks should be earmarked Earthquake relief.

• Please let Linda know if you will be attending the RI Convention in Montreal as there will be a District 7390 event.

• Anyone interested in more information about the 10-day Rotary/JCC Trip to Israel (www.rotaryjcctrip2israel.com) from Oct. 10 to 20, 2010, please contact York Rotarian Elliott Weinstein at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. • THE ROTARIAN MAGAZINE - now that you've finished reading the last issue, consider taking it to the office waiting room, your dentist or doctor's office, or someplace where others would have the chance to read all about Rotary and the projects being done around the world.

The annual Robert D. Hanson Rotary Excellence Award meeting was called to Order by President-elect Dr. John Judson filling in for our esteemed President Carolyn.  Will Everhart gave the invocation and after the pledge and singing of America the Beautiful led by Tom Arnoldi and a blue badge promotion Andy Rebuck brought the club up to date on the Special Events committee plans. First is a sweethearts evening to be held on Tuesday February 9 at the 3-D IMAX Theatre for a showing of Dolphins and Whales.  There is FREE admission for Rotarians and their sweethearts.  Second is the announcement of the planning of 9 and dine events once the weather breaks.  Details to follow.  Third is the scheduling of a Harrisburg Rotary Day at Camelback on January 28.  Please call any of the committee members for more details.

Next Bill Murray presented a Resolution in honor of Albert Allen who passed away this past July, recognize his life of service and philanthropy.

Next was a Youth Community Development Committee update reminding and inviting all to the teams annual fundraising report program being held on Tuesday January 12 at 11:30 at the Chamber of Commerce headquarters.

Pat Amice then introduced visiting Rotarians (a couple from Leesburg Virginia) and guests which included several prospective new members and Daniel “Dean’s List” Lutz, son of our own Kevin Lutz.

President-elect John then turned the meeting over to Barry Ramper for the main purpose of today’s meeting:  The presentation of the Robert D. Hanson Rotary Excellence Award.  Barry began by introducing prior recipients of the award seated at the head table and several took the opportunity to welcome their newest member of this distinguished club, Gib Parthemore.  Past President Ramper then reviewed Gib’s many contributions to Rotary during his 19 years of membership in the Rotary Club of Harrisburg and Gib’s “never say no” response to any call to duty on behalf of the club, the district and RI.  It became very clear to all in attendance why Gib received this honor today.

Gib began his remarks by thanking his family:  father Gil and brother Bruce who could not join him today, his brother Steve, mother Sondra and sons Christopher and Gib.  Saving the best for last he thanked his best friend, wife and life partner Joanna.

Gib’s remarks were brief but very to the point.  Rotary has been his most rewarding avenue of service he has ever been involved in.  He thanked Doug Piper for bringing him into the fold and his parents for instilling in him the ideals of service above self by their involvement with Rotary and Seroptimist Clubs. Gib challenged us all to recruit new members in order to achieve our goals internationally, at the district level and at the club level.

Gib closed by quoting Bob Hanson:
“ One cannot just exist.  One must make a difference.”

Dr. John thanked Al Morrison and then led the club in the repeating of the four-way test.  Meeting adjourned until Monday January 25.
