PROGRAM:
Doug Neidich is the Chairman & Chief Executive Officer of GreenWorks Development, LLC.

GreenWorks Development, LLC works to enhance the quality of life in the capital region by creating new communities in previously developed urban areas. They believe there is extraordinary value in the restoration of our older, blighted communities, rather than contributing to suburban sprawl by paving over our ever-shrinking open spaces.  They focus on renewal projects in the 6-County Central Pennsylvania region, with activities currently underway in Harrisburg, Carlisle, and several other midstate communities and townships.

Prior to co-founding GreenWorks, Doug founded InterCon Systems, a developer and manufacturer of high-density, high-speed electronic connector systems. He took the company from the garage to over $20 million in sales before selling it to the Amphenol Corporation in April of 2005. He brings successful full-cycle entrepreneurial experience to GreenWorks. Doug earned his BS in Mechanical Engineering from the Pennsylvania State University in 1980.

Thanks again,

Wayman Tisdale - Smooth jazz
February 5, 7:30 PM
Sunoco Performance Theater
Wayman Tisdale has made the transition to become an accomplished jazz bassist, since his retirement from the NBA at the end of the 1997 season. Emerging as one of the most consistent and admired players during his 12 years in the NBA, he is also a trailblazer in the field of music with his unique use of the bass as a melodic lead instrument.

Tisdale’s latest album, Rebound, includes collaboration with Toby Keith on the song Never Gonna Give You Up. The album’s first single, Throwin’ It Down, has earned a Top 20 spot on the Smooth Jazz charts. Tisdale recently stated, "Rebound is a reflection of what has been going on. It has been one of those roads, a winding road that I have taken, and I thank God he has kept me and I am still here. I am encouraged by this CD, and the great musicians who have collaborated with me. This gives me the chance to show people I have made it, and you can make it, too."

A gifted athlete, Tisdale spent much of his youth on the basketball court when not making music. He played for the University of Oklahoma and in 1984 played on the gold-medal-winning U.S. Olympic team. He joined the Indiana Pacers in 1986 as the No. 2 draft pick. For the next 12 years, Tisdale left his mark on the NBA, scoring more than 12,800 points and pulling down more than 5,000 rebounds in a 12-year career.

Before his retirement from the NBA, Tisdale had already made the transition toward a career in music. In 1995 he released his debut CD, appropriately titled Power Forward, which went to No. 4 on Billboard’s Contemporary Jazz charts. His subsequent albums included In the Zone, Decisions, Face to Face, Hang Time and Way Up! Several of his songs became No. 1 radio hits – Can’t Hide Love and Ain’t No Stoppin’ Us Now.

Tisdale currently moves between his homes in Tulsa and Los Angeles with his wife Regina , with whom he has four children. Tisdale says that his first passion is entertainment. “I was born to entertain,” he says. “I just love people and I feel like entertainment goes right in line with my personality. Whether it’s on the stage or playing basketball, it’s just what I’ve been called to do on this earth.”

ATTENDANCE:
LAST ROTARY MEETING:  1/12/09       60%
Rotarians   81    Active Specials   8   Guests   26   Visiting Rotarians  0  = 115

Minutes by Dave Freet
Rotary attendees were entertained and serenaded with the return of our own Al Morrison who “tickled the ivories” for us.  Al was in fine form and his music “splendiferous.”

President Barry called today’s meeting to order at 12:17 PM.  Rotarian Doug Pieper, who also led Club singing of “America”, provided our invocation.

President Barry re-opened our meeting at 12:23 PM and began with the introduction of Jeannette Archer-Simons to provide a Rotary Minute.  She spoke about Rotary International and its commitment in support of efforts to eliminate polio and HIV throughout the world.  It’s just one way Rotary International utilizes our contributions to better the world in which we live.

Greeter for the day, Beth Pfeiffer, was called upon to introduce Rotarians with guests attending today’s meeting.  The entire club welcomed the guests.

Carolyn Dumaresq was introduced to recognize students and teachers “of the quarter.”  All our local schools were represented, which included:  Bishop McDevitt, John Harris campus of Harrisburg Schools, Sci-Tech High School, and William Penn Campus of Harrisburg Schools.  An impressive group of individuals, both students and teachers, were honored as representatives of their schools for the month.

Two new members (Fran Seeger and Kathleen Howley) were inducted into the club today also by President-Elect Carolyn Dumaresq.  Members are encouraged to invite potential new members to attend our weekly meetings and to welcome them into joining our Club.

Past President, Carrie Wissler Thomas, introduced today’s meeting with the presentation of the “Robert D. Hanson Rotary Excellence Award.”  Bob Hanson was a role model for all who knew him and exemplified the Rotary 4-Way Test in his personal, professional and Rotary life.  Harrisburg Rotary was honored to have had Bob Hanson as a member and acknowledged his exemplary leadership and contributions by naming this award in his recognition.  The prestigious award for 2009 was awarded to Una Sheridan Martone-Executive Director of Leadership Harrisburg.

Following being named as the recipient of the “Robert D. Hanson Rotary Excellence Award,” Una provided comments.  Specifically, she noted a desire to continue Bob Hanson’s legacy.  Her work with Harrisburg Rotary’s Youth Community Development Team (YCDT) earned her this recognition.  She noted, however, it is a “group effort” within Harrisburg Rotary launched five (5) years ago using teaching team skills that forces young people to interact “face-to-face,” as opposed to using technology.  They have 33 students representing from 8th to 12th grades in their classes this year and are being taught life skills of communication.  The three C’s Una noted of critical importance for the students to learn were:  communication, consensus building and collaborating.

President Barry closed today’s meeting quoting one of Bob Hanson’s favorite sayings: “One cannot just exist, but needs to make a difference.”  That epitomizes who Bob Hanson was and the legacy he has left behind to challenge all of us to be better individuals!
