PROGRAM:
John Judson completed medical school at Georgetown then general surgery and cardiac surgery residencies at Yale, University of Utah, and Mayo Clinic. His United States practice in both academic and private practices has been primarily in the field of cardiac and thoracic surgery. In 1968, while still in residency, John and his wife, Ann Marie first had their first opportunity to work in Haiti at the Hospital Albert Schweitzer (HAS) which had opened its doors in 1956. Between then and 1997, there were 30 to 35 short-term volunteer trips to Haiti as well as other trips to Nicaragua and Poland. During that time, John and Ann Marie also raised and educated their five children. Special problems at HAS in 1997 led John to leave private practice in Harrisburg so that he and Ann Marie could spend two years there serving in multiple capacities: for John - Chief of Surgery and Medical Director, for Ann Marie – housing director, assistant to the co-founder, Mdme Mellon, and numerous other tasks. On return to Harrisburg in 1999, John made an important career decision to leave the private practice of surgery in order to work in more administrative roles and to have more time for volunteer activities. This included completing a masters degree in Public Administration at Penn State, serving as interim medical director at Hamilton Health Center from 2000 to 2003 and currently as a board member at the Community Check Up Center in South Harrisburg. As a consultant for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, John now spends his working hours with the MCARE Fund (malpractice super fund operated by the state) and the medical licensing division of the state department. Both he and Ann Marie continue to return to HAS two to four times per year for volunteer service. Other volunteer trips in the past eight years have included Rotary missions to Haiti, Dominican Republic, and Ethiopia.

John was not active in Rotary until 1997 but had recognized the tremendous service provided to developing nations by this organization. Shortly after arrival in Haiti in 1997, there was an opportunity to form a Rotary Club in the neighboring town of St. Marc. John became one of their charter members driving an hour each way over dark very bumpy roads for weekly meetings. On return to the states in 1999, he first joined the Capital City Rotary and then moved to our club in 2003. During the last ten years, the humanitarian work of Rotary International has been the focus of John’s Rotary membership both in Haiti and Harrisburg.

Wil Everhart introduced visiting Rotarians and guests.

Program:
Dr. Madlyn Hanes, Chancellor of Penn State Harrisburg, gave a presentation on Penn State Harrisburg entitled The Engaged University. She indicated that the Capital Region has high schools that exceed the Commonwealth’s average graduation rate and college matriculation rate and a higher education environment that has reached a critical mass. She discussed the Campus’ history and mission, accessibility, and plans for growth. The Campus graduates approximately 1,000 students each year and is the second largest campus following University Park. Dr. Hanes also spoke about the school’s involvement in the community and coordination with other higher educational institutions such as HACC. She indicated Penn State has approximately a half million alumni – what can I say, I’m one of them. GO PENN STATE!

Mini-Classification Talk:
Bridget Quigley gave a mini-classification talk. She explained what she liked about her job with PNC Bank. She also discussed her community activities and encouraged Rotarians to reach out to young people to engage them in community activities.

Announcements and Committee Reports:
President Garry congratulated Allen Westbrook, on his appointment as Chair of the Harrisburg Regional Chamber Board of Directors and Sally Klein and Bill Murray, for their appointments to the HACC Board of Directors.

Sandy Beck solicited testimonials from Andy Rebuck and Al Baker on the benefits of being a Rotarian and encouraged members to actively seek new members to share those benefits. A list of the “Top Ten Reasons Why You Should Join Rotary” was passed out at the meeting. Sandy suggested Rotarians to use this list to encourage potential new members.
