LAST ROTARY MEETING:   1/24/11       59%
Rotarians   75      Active Specials   9         Guests   6         Visiting Rotarians  0  =  90
Minutes by Jeffry Haas:
As today’s meeting was led by first year Rotarians, acting president Corinne Rebinski called our meeting to order shortly after 12:00 pm. John Packer delivered the invocation followed by the singing of “America the Beautiful”, led by Beth Persun. We then recited the pledge and greeted our fellow Rotarians.

Greeter Chief Peter Ressler introduced guests and visiting Rotarians; 4 guests joined us for lunch. Ira Packman gave his mini-classification talk; he is a retired physician on his fifth career. He grew up in Philadelphia and attended Central High. After graduating, he attended Bucknell University and then medical school at Hershey Med in one of its earliest classes. After graduating from Hershey Med, he had his residency at Harrisburg Hospital before moving to Gallup, NM. He was called back to Harrisburg and founded, with his partners, Internists of Central PA. He retired in 2008. He knew Dr. Judson from the Medical Field and joined Rotary as a result. He is married, has 2 daughters, 1 step daughter and 1 step son. He is an active musician and has released a CD; he also used to be an avid motorcycle rider before an accident caused him to retire from riding; he now owns a fishing boat in FL

Committee reports were then presented:
• Centennial Committee, led by Andy Rebuck – the club is almost 100 years old. On Monday, May 16, 2011 we will have our 100 year celebration, to be held from 11:30-2:00 pm. We are looking for volunteers. Harrisburg Rotary has also donated 100 trees to the city of Harrisburg, and 2/3 have been planted; 1/3 remains, and we are in need of volunteers to help with the planting
• Homeless Shelter – Chuck Wingate reminded us that Harrisburg Rotary will be providing service the homeless shelter from Monday, 1/23 – Monday 1/31. We need more volunteers to fill all slots. Volunteers were requested to have a short meeting immediately following our weekly Rotary meeting.
• Youth Exchange Committee, led by Caryn Carr – March 19th is the Youth Exchange overnight, and we are in need of volunteers for both the overnight and the next morning. Steve Feinour introduced Javier, an exchange student from Spain, who spoke for a few minutes on his experiences here in America and what things he has seen and done. He is enjoying his time here.
• Salvation Army Bell Ringing – Hal Horowitz thanked all the volunteers who helped. Almost $1000 was dropped in the buckets for our 2 days. We need a chairman for next year, as Hal has done it for 17 years!

Speaker:
Jane Abrams introduced Linda LeFevre and Jennifer Eckinger. Linda oversees academic programs at HACC, and has worked to create a wine program. She discussed how HACC is addressing the education needs for the wine industry, including programs for Viticulture and Enology. They provide 2 different achievements in 2 different programs: a certificate or an Associate in Applied Science in either Viticulture or Enology. We learned what courses are taught and what jobs a HACC graduate can expect to fill.

A second speaker was Jennifer Eckinger, who is the Executive Director of the Pennsylvania Wine Association. She educated us on Pennsylvania wineries and how to learn and enjoy more about Pennsylvania wines. We learned that Pennsylvania is the 5th largest wine producer in the U.S., and that we have 150 wineries with 14,000 acres under vine. Pennsylvania wineries focus on the grapes most suited to our climate, and produce a variety of wines. Two good ways to tour Pennsylvania wineries is by region or as a wine trail. She provided us with a book that shows where the wineries are and how best to find them. We were also encouraged to use their website as a way to discover more about the wines and the winemakers.
After a brief Q&A, acting president Corinne thanked everyone for their attendance and closed our meeting at 1:15 pm.
