NEWS AND NOTES:
The Fellowship Committee invites all members and their guests to attend our “Nine and Dine” events in 2010.  Once a month, at a different venue each month, we will play nine holes of golf and have a chance to grab a bite to eat and a cold drink.  In order to plan ahead and accommodate attendance every month we ask that you sign up either for the golf and dine package or either golf only or dine only.  In other words there will be a sign up sheet each month.  (You certainly can play golf with a preplanned group or ask to be grouped by the host of each event.)  This is not a fundraiser for the club-it is a fellowship event-but you will need to budget to pay the announced fees for the golf and food.  You will also receive a make up for attendance! Our July event is set for Tuesday July 27 at Rich Valley Golf Course and the after golf fellowship is hosted by Rotarian Pat Amice.  This course is near Cumberland Valley High School on Rich Valley Road in Mechanicsburg and Pat lives just minutes from the course.  Tee times will start at 5:30 and cost to play and ride is only $18. Again following golf all are invited to “swing” by Pat’s house for a cold drink and delicious snack.  Sign up today and see you on the first tee on the 27th!

2010-11 Rosters are now available. Pick yours up at a Rotary meeting.  Additional Rosters are $3.  Special thanks to our advertisers:  Homeland Hospice, Edward Jones, Edward L. Heim Company, Last Paige Consulting LLC, PMI Property Management Inc, Leadership Harrisburg and Goodwill.

Ah, the glory of “Tradition”!  And what fits with tradition more than the Changing of the Rotary Guard?”  Today our meeting had a touch of Auld Lang Syne as we bid adieu to President Carolyn and welcomed John Judson as our new President.  President Carolyn called the meeting to order at 12:14 PM exactly, noting that this was her last time to do so.   Wil Everhart gave a thoughtful invocation that reflected on and gave thanks for Carolyn’s year as President and her service to our Club.  Then Doug Pieper led us in a rousing a cappella verse of “America the Beautiful.”

Wil Everhart was in charge of greetings.  A visiting Rotarian from Tucson , Stan Cramer, brought us a flag.  Several Rotarians had guests, most notably President Carolyn, who brought her husband Dick, and President-Elect John, who brought his wife Ann Marie and a dear friend, Margee Kooistra, whose husband had been a member of our Club.  After a quick-find of the written program by Linda-I-can-find-anything-Freedenberg, several birthdays were also announced.

YCDT (Youth Community Development Team) came front and center with a presentation of $6,000 from their fundraising efforts. Channels Food Rescue was the recipient of the YCDT Team’s generosity today. Great goin’ “guys” (& gals)!  You’re our hope for the future.

Maria Persico had the pleasure of introducing our newest Paul Harris Fellows.  Included today in recognition were: John Griner, Bill Spahr, Bill Boles, David Morrison, Jim Miller (+1, which means this is second Fellow toward Rotary International work!!), Connie Siegel (+3 – really wowser, Connie!), Mark Stone, and John Judson (+1 – ditto the above, almost-Pres John)!

President-still-in-office-Carolyn recognized Rotarians whose work both locally and internationally was exemplary during her year as President.  Citations were given to John Judson, Peggy Grove, Bob Hall, Bob Hostetter, Rich Moultrie, Barry Ramper, Jacqueline Jackson-DeGarcia, and Karen Paris.

Wil-triple-duty-get-your-billfold-out-Everhart again came up to share the mic with Rotarians for good news reporting.  Our Club abounds in good news from border collie wins to college acceptances and much in between.  Along with good news, Maria Persico announced an additional member of the Paul Harris award, Jack Detweiler. (way to go, Jack).

President Carolyn again took the podium and, in a very heartfelt way, told the members that she both started, and will end her year, with mixed emotions.  Although there is some relief there is also some sadness.  From her perspective, she could see all that goes into making our Club as successful as it is.  She noted that so many Rotarians go above and beyond in what they do to help us raise so much money that we were able to stretch our support internationally as well as raising a record amount from the Pancake Breakfast for the School.  She thanked “Program Bob”, who, “for the most part” gave her good advice, and Janice Black for providing “good advice when I needed it”, and of course, a thank you to Linda Freedenberg as no President can survive without a “right hand, left hand, and legs”.  Carolyn thanked her husband, her mother and the members.  She feels she is leaving the Club in good hands by turning over the Presidency to John.  Her final words brought the crowd to their feet in a standing ovation for all she has done this year.  Thank you Carolyn; we owe you a debt of thanks.

Bob Hall and Janice Black, both PDG’s, shared the responsibility of inducting our new board and officers.  Janice read a short piece she wrote entitled “The Essence of Rotary”.   John was inducted as President and then the incoming Board and officers also took an oath of office.

New President John took the podium by thanking “a remarkable lady”, Carolyn, for her leadership of both local and international service while bringing us fellowship.    This brought another standing ovation for Carolyn.

John presented a brief overview of his goals.  1) Membership – increased membership; 2) Service – both local and international, noting that he would like to see one more local project in the City of Harrisburg, and one non-medical mission in Haiti plus an opportunity for a polio team internationally;  3) Fellowship – John noted that Andy Rebuck stands out as a flagship in this area and that the club could add some diversity (spouses/families) to its activities and perhaps start an interest-area fellowship; 4) Networking – John noted that on weeks without meetings there will be fun and fellowship opportunities at 5 PM which may/not have a program;  5) Enhanced orientation for new members and using service as a beacon for drawing others into our Club.

John closed with a request for ideas, comments, suggestions, etc.  He thanked the Club for entrusting its leadership to him.  After the 4 Way Test recital, Carolyn handed the gavel to John who rang the bell ending the meeting.

There is NO meeting next week (holiday).
