HAPPY BIRTHDAY

Sorry, no birthdays this week, but login to the new Rotary website to see upcoming birthdays at www.hbgrotary.org.

PROGRAM: Our speaker this week is considered to be one of Harrisburg's most significant black "grass roots" leaders.  Pete is a sophisticated organizer who is now looked upon as a critical player in addressing the horrendous issues of young black men who are shooting one another.

We have invited him to speak to us in order to broaden our understanding, bring us closer to street based dynamics which are playing havoc in parts of our greater Harrisburg and American urban society.

Most of us lack genuine understanding, most of us are troubled by this deathly phenomenon, and as Rotarians who are compelled to care and ask an essential question such as "what can we do?", Pete's remarks hopefully bring us closer to understanding.

William 'Pete' Washington is currently retired and the former Public Housing administrator and city planner. He has received numerous awards and recognition for community service.

Public Relations Seminar -

Join us Wednesday, August 5, 2009 for a productive public relationship training session for Rotary leadership, committee chairs and members designed to improve your skills with the media.  Skills learned will be applicable to your Rotary life, your career and your personal life. The training will be held at the Wyndham Garden Hotel, 765 Eisenhower Boulevard, Harrisburg, PA from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. A light supper will be provided beginning at 5:30 p.m. with the Seminar to begin at 6:00 p.m. Please register by Friday, July 31, 2009.  See Linda for a registration form.

Expected Outcomes:  Following the training, participants will be better able to strategize how to involve and manage media, conduct meaningful media interviews and become a resource to area media.  Additionally, club members will have a host of new techniques and approaches to grow membership through good media relations and results.

What Is Involved:  Participants will join a class of peers interested in improving their personal skills for working with the media and for conducting interviews.  Using a well-tested subject agenda, participants will walk through:

·         Relationship building with the media
·         Determining what is news
·         Understanding your ultimate audience
·         Preparing for media interviews
·         Setting the scope of an interview
·         Conducting an interview
·         Dressing for an interview
·         Following up with editors and reporters
·         Evaluating your performance and theirs (the media's)

Depending on group size, at least three people will be selected to do on-camera interviews with a “reporter.”  Subject matter will be determined by you, the participant.  The resulting 3 – 5 minute video will be used with the full class to demonstrate the participants’ strengths and areas needing improvement.  All of this analysis is done with positive re-enforcement.  Volunteering participants will get to keep their video for future use and reference.

This year’s pancake breakfast fundraiser is scheduled for October 24, 2009 at Harrisburg High School. The first committee meeting will be held August 24.

Our program was a Club Assembly/Strategic Plan Report. President Carolyn led a presentation on our Vision for 2009-10, including our strategic plan goals, District goals and International goals. Past President Barry Ramper reviewed our club’s results from 2008-09. He also commented on our goal of sustaining a membership of 201 members. The 200 member level seems to be a plateau that we can’t sustain given the normal loss of members to resignations, etc. So our goal of 201 is actually a formidable challenge. Membership as of today July 13, 2009 is at 198. Kent Frese reviewed our recent club survey results revealing some interesting trends. The slides used for today’s presentation, including the survey results and our goals, are accessible by logging into our website or directly by using the following link http://www.hbgrotary.org/images/stories/2009-rotary-news/Rotary-Strategic-Plan-for-Membership-13jul09.pdf.
