Public Relations Seminar - Join us Wednesday, August 5, 2009 for a productive public relationship training session for Rotary leadership, committee chairs and members designed to improve your skills with the media.  Skills learned will be applicable to your Rotary life, your career and your personal life.

The training will be held at the Wyndham Garden Hotel, 765 Eisenhower Boulevard, Harrisburg, PA from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. A light supper will be provided beginning at 5:30 p.m. with the Seminar to begin at 6:00 p.m. Please register by Friday, July 31, 2009.  See Linda for a registration form.

Expected Outcomes:  Following the training, participants will be better able to strategize how to involve and manage media, conduct meaningful media interviews and become a resource to area media.  Additionally, club members will have a host of new techniques and approaches to grow membership through good media relations and results.

What Is Involved:  Participants will join a class of peers interested in improving their personal skills for working with the media and for conducting interviews.  Using a well-tested subject agenda, participants will walk through:

·         Relationship building with the media
·         Determining what is news
·         Understanding your ultimate audience
·         Preparing for media interviews
·         Setting the scope of an interview
·         Conducting an interview
·         Dressing for an interview
·         Following up with editors and reporters
·         Evaluating your performance and theirs (the media's)

Depending on group size, at least three people will be selected to do on-camera interviews with a “reporter.”  Subject matter will be determined by you, the participant.  The resulting 3 – 5 minute video will be used with the full class to demonstrate the participants’ strengths and areas needing improvement.  All of this analysis is done with positive re-enforcement.  Volunteering participants will get to keep their video for future use and reference.

President Carolyn initially opened the day’s meeting at 12:15 PM and re-opened the meeting for the formal activities at 12:20 PM.

The day’s Invocation was provided by Tom Arnoldi along with leading everyone in singing “My Country Tis of Thee,” which was followed by the Pledge of Allegiance to our Flag.

Greeter for the day was Pat Amice who announced guests and one visiting Rotarian from Hanover, PA.

A “Mini-Classification Talk” was provided by Howard Ross who did an excellent job of both describing what it is he does and accomplishing that in a timely manner!  Howard is Executive Director of the Jewish Community Foundation.  In that role he educates his members bringing them together and oversees technology and insures that the Foundation fulfills all legal and functional requirements.  He has worked for the Jewish community for over 35 years.

President Carolyn, prior to the introduction of the day’s speaker, acknowledged, noted our sadness, and  requested a “moment of silence” honoring one of our own who recently passed away – Nick Connolly.

Bob Hostetter was called upon to introduce our speaker, Pete Washington.  Pete is considered one of Harrisburg’s significant black “grass roots” leaders.  A sophisticated organizer who is a critical player in attempting to address the terrible issues of young black men killing each other, spending time in prison, not accepting responsibility for their families, etc.  Pete retired as a former Public Housing administrator and City of Harrisburg Planner.

Pete began by noting he “likely” will tramp on some toes with his “straight-forward” perspective.  Building “social infrastructure” was his key topic.  He related he was an abandoned child, raised in the projects by loving grandparents, a structured household.
In commenting on Harrisburg segregation – separate neighborhoods of the Hill, separate territory of blacks vs. whites, and gangs.

He talked about the level of violence as a health issue.  It’s an “attitude” issue/education issue, in his opinion.  He proposed a public/private consortium to fund, analyze and assess causes of violence in Harrisburg.  Only then, after this initial step, should investments be made in addressing areas determined to mitigate violence in our community.

Pete commented that community leadership is needed, not “community bleeders” who show up, absorb government/private money and disappear as soon as the money is exhausted.  He acknowledges he doesn’t personally have the answers, but a need exists to work together to find answers to our City’s violence issues.

A significant Question and Answer (Comment) period took place.  Pete provided “blunt,” straight forward perspectives in response to questions acknowledging there is no simple answer.  One of the key aspects to resolving over the longer term troubled black youth’s issues is “education, education, education!”  We need to start with the parents, provide /ensure education for all, and teach respect for others.  Bottom line is providing the needed investment to accomplish this objective.

Pete believes youth need to be told they are not “entitled.”  They need to work to help themselves and earn job opportunities.  The youth need discipline in their lives!  Much thought-provoking discussion and sincere concern was expressed by many in our Club.
An excellent program that didn’t avoid the 800 pound gorilla in the room, and attempted to take communicate steps that must be taken to begin to turn around the situation that presently exists related to violence.

At 1:15 PM President Carolyn closed our meeting with the joint recital of the Four-Way Test.
