Program - Dr. John Gavazzi-- Topic: Suicide and Depression - hope and options
Pauline Wallin introduced Dr. John Gavazzi to our club. Dr. Gavazzi is a Psychologist who is Board Certified in Clinical Psychology. He earned an undergraduate degree from Penn State University and a Doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Licensed since 1990, he has a small, independent practice in Camp Hill. He has written on professional ethics, as well as, medication and children. He has also presented on a variety of topics to include,
depression, suicide, workplace stress, workplace safety and understanding the mind body relationship.
He gave us a brief overview on the topic of depression. Nineteen million Americans suffer annually from depression. Depression crosses into all classes, genders, and socio-economic levels of people. Depression is more than just feeling sad. It involves the loss of pleasure from your hobbies, activities and relationships with friends and family. Signs of depression involve loss of appetite, sleep/weight loss or gain, restlessness and preoccupation with death and suicide. Treatment can be found by medication and psychotherapy of which 80% of people can see results. He talked about depression in the workplace and indicated that depression cost industry $43.7 billion dollars annually. He further suggested that we can limit the chances of serious depression and its effects by looking after our nutritional needs, work/life/family balance, exercise, prioritize what's important in our life and a diet that involves Omega 3 fatty acids. Adequate time was available for a lively question and answer period from the membership.
