PROGRAM: Congressman Holden, born March 5, 1957, is a native of St. Clair, Pennsylvania. Public service has played an integral role in Tim's family history. His father, Joseph "Sox" Holden was a four term County Commissioner. His great grandfather, John Siney, was founder of the Miners Benevolent Association, which evolved into the United Mine Workers.

After attending St. Mary's Elementary School and St. Clair Area High School, he received an athletic scholarship to Fork Union Military Academy, completing one year of college prep. Tim earned a football scholarship to the University of Richmond but an unfortunate bout with tuberculosis cut short his college career. After recuperating, Tim completed his education at Bloomsburg University, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology.

In 1980 Tim earned his license as an insurance broker and real estate agent, enabling him to gain experience in the family business. Tim went on to work as a probation officer and then sergeant-at-arms for the Pennsylvania House of Representatives. Tim was Sheriff of Schuylkill County from 1985 to 1992.

Tim began his eighth term as a Member of Congress in January 2007. The Seventeenth District is comprised of Schuylkill, Dauphin and Lebanon Counties, as well as part of Perry and Berks Counties.

Tim has been a member of the Agriculture Committee since 1993, and was recently appointed Vice Chairman of the House Agriculture committee in the 110th Congress. He was also selected to serve as the Chairman of the Agriculture Committee’s Subcommittee on Conservation, Credit, Energy, and Research, and continues to serve on the Livestock, Dairy, and Poultry Subcommittee. In the 105th Congress, Tim was appointed to the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee. Tim serves on the Transportation Subcommittees on Highways and Transit and Aviation.
He and his wife Gwen live in St. Clair, Schuylkill County.

These are fun, social mixers from 5 to 7 PM where fellow Rotarians and their guests meet at one of our area restaurants and nightclubs and receive an attendance make-up!
 
 As summer heats up, we will take our Happy Hour outside!  The Hilton will host this event June 26 right in front of the hotel at their patio bar.

President Carrie brought the meeting to order at the Hilton as customary with singing, the Pledge of Allegiance and an invocation.

Guy Patterson introduced guests and visiting Rotarians.

John Judson presented Paul Harris Fellow awards to Peggy Grove, John Smither on behalf of his daughter Vivian Fry, Richard Curl, and Albert Schmidt.

Jack Detweiler introduced Stephen Davidson, his teacher from Susquenita High School and his parents. Stephen was selected as the winner of our club’s outstanding Science Fair Project award for ecology of $500. Steven explained his project as an experiment to determine if use of a magnetic field and certain chemicals integrated into an oil tanker’s hull could facilitate “clotting” of a breach in the hull thereby preventing oil spills.

Dolores Liptak introduced two members of our Youth Community Development Team who explained the purpose of YCDT (to provide high school students with hands-on community development experience); project selection (substance abuse); their fund raising efforts (selling candy bars, pancake breakfast and community solicitations); and selection of a beneficiary (Drug Free Pennsylvania). The students presented a check for $6,000 to Drug Free Pennsylvania. The funds will be used for a project to discuss the media’s presentation of substance abuse issues.

President Carrie reminded the members of our next Happy Hour on May 22 at Bricco – Third and Chestnut Streets, from 5 to 7 PM.

Program:
            Bob Hostetter introduced our speaker, Sergeant Kristal Turner-Childs, of the Pennsylvania State Police. Sergeant Turner-Childs gave a light hearted presentation about things from a State Police Officer’s perspective covering such topics as driving in the left lane; excuses for speeding; eating lunch as a state trooper; handling a “cows on the road” situation; being introduced as “my friend the police officer;” how men react to her and how women react to her. She also discussed a number of serious topics like being shot at, wearing a bullet-proof vest and “driving while black”, i.e. racial profiling. She stated that of a force of around 4,300 individuals only 4% are women. The PSP are actively trying to increase the diversity of the force. She also stated that a new trooper starts at $50,740 per year.
