LAST ROTARY MEETING:  6/20/11
Minutes by Andy Rebuck:
Rotary Club of Harrisburg hosted a “summer kick-off” meeting on June 20th at the Hilton!  No, it was not extremely sunny and hot and no there was no salt water taffy and sand involved.  Yes though it was a “summer kick-off” meeting and let me just explain that to you.

“S” most assuredly stood for “Simply Smashing” as the music provided by Rotarian Norma and the two young students was the first of Norma’s plan to add “moments for music” to the agenda this summer.

“U” might stand for “usual” or maybe “up to date” as we enjoyed Carolyn’s invocation, Tom’s club singing and Beth’s intro of guests with Una, Matt and Bob C.

The first “M” of course is for “membership” and what better way to say that then with introduction of four newer members: take a Minute and say hello to John Kooti, Maddie Yound, Lori Hoffmaster and Hava Pell next meeting please!

The second “M” jumps right in and stands for “milestones” as in our 100th anniversary!  Yes, we are hosting a Centennial gala Wednesday July 13th from 6 to 9 at Whitaker Center Kunkel Gallery and you and your guests are invited.  Along with the party we drew the names of ten Rotarians to be featured on area billboards as part of our celebration.  Keep an eye out for smiling photos of these members in coming days!

“E” has to stand for “energy” as in all the work and dedication that goes into our annual strategic plan!  Una hopped to the podium and outlined this year’s strategy to once again drive service opportunities, embrace membership development and focus on branding of our message internally and externally.  Congrats again to all those involved in generating this energy!

Summer would not be summer without “refreshing” breezes so the “R” stands for just that and thank a bunch to our guest speaker Derek Hathaway for his insightful, articulate, and refreshing viewpoints shared today.

If you missed this meeting you not only missed a chance to enjoy a summer kick-off but you missed the chance to hear one of the icons of the Harrisburg landscape.  Derek was right on the money as he commented that when doing a strategic plan you have to be willing to start from where you are, you have to be realistic, you have to get things done, that it is important to define who you are, keep the distant goal in view and finally that you have to manage expectations and delivery to gain credibility.

See you at the beach—uh, next meeting—soon….
