• Condolences to Deb Abel and her husband Josh Millman on the loss of her father-in-law George Millman.
Looking for Doubles Team tennis players. The District Doubles Tennis Tournament will be held on September 17th at Allenberry from 2:30-5:30 PM with dinner to follow. Cost to players will be approximately $40 (which includes court time and dinner). Please contact Linda if you are interested.
• Host Families Sought for 2-week Student Exchange Program in September
HACC is in its fourth year of hosting International Business students from Minerva Business College in Randers , Denmark . Students will be accompanied by their faculty and will spend two weeks on campus studying, touring area businesses and landmarks, and meeting with business, industry and government representatives. The College is seeking host families for the nineteen students, who range in ages 16 through 21, and all are fluent in English.
Students will arrive on Campus on Wednesday, September 9th, and depart on Tuesday, September 22nd. While weekday transportation of the students to and from the College by the host family is preferred, it should not be a deterrent to hosting a student, as the Minerva faculty will have a van to assist with transportation needs. The students start most of their days at HACC at 9:00 AM, and are free to leave between 3:30 and 5:00 PM; they are available during the evenings and weekends to participate in activities with you, and your friends and family.
We hope you will consider hosting a student for this short period of time. It is an excellent way for you and your family to become acquainted with Denmark, Scandinavian culture, and build a friendship with a Danish student. Please contact Dean Linda LeFevre with any questions either at 717-780-2366 or at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . If you wish to consider hosting a student, Linda will send you a link to view their profiles.

Minutes by Andy Rebuck:
First thing you need is to get quality ribs. I like to see Brian Weaver at the West Shore Farmer’s Market, but you can shop for great ribs at a number of places. What? You say I am supposed to pen the minutes of the June 22 Rotary meeting and not give the secret recipe to world famous BBQ spare ribs?
Oh, great, you say I can do both! Perfect then and here goes….
At exactly 12:16 on a sunny, second day of summer, our club was brought to attention by President Barry to hear the invocation by Al Schmidt and the national anthem led by Tom Arnoldi.
Jeanette Archer-Simons gave a phone report from our three members attending the international convention in England! It sounds like Una Martone, Tom Johnston and John Judson are thoroughly immersed in the wonderful world of Rotary!
Wash the ribs in cool water and pat dry with paper towels. Then you want to dry rub the ribs. Yes you can make your own dry rub or buy any number of these on the shelves but the secret to world famous ribs is the rub! I recommend Butt Rub brand.
Our club was treated to a great new member presentation by Nichole Baer. Nichole gave a personal talk about her role as the director of Hospice at Homeland Center. If you missed this meeting make sure you ask her about her job.
Dudley Smith led the introduction of five guests sponsored by Rotarians Wallin, Saline and Reed.
Preheat oven to 500, place a half cup of water in metal pan, add ribs to pans (don’t stack more than 2 layers high) and cover pan tightly with foil. With oven at 500 degrees add the ribs for 30 minutes and then lower temperature to 250 degrees. Continue to cook ribs for two more hours on this low heat.
President Barry took a few minutes to direct our club to a brochure highlighting the Rotary Boy Scout cabin at Hidden Valley Camp. This cabin was built many years ago with funding from our club and was recently completely remodeled. The scouts still need to generate about $25K of the $75K total and perhaps our members might consider a donation for this effort.
At exactly 12:36 our guest speaker was introduced in the nicest of ways by Aji Abraham. Aji started by saying a quick introduction to follow but first he noted Jack Snavely brought him as a guest to our club 15 years ago and that he had stayed at Rotary Lodge when in scouts and would certainly support this effort. Aji then stayed on target with a warm introduction of today’s speaker, Commissioner Joel Ario with the PA Insurance Commission.
We were treated to a direct, insightful and encouraging presentation about the insurance system and in particular the health insurance system. Commissioner Ario pointed out three concerns with health insurance: affordability, exclusion and fairness. While the problems seem apparent, Joel pointed out that the solutions will be tough to secure in our political system where heavy lobbying will occur on all sides.
Take the ribs out and add your favorite wet sauce. We like Jack Daniel’s spicy version. Cover and place ribs back in oven for one more hour then serve with plenty of paper towels and place a bowl on the table for the bones!
Today’s topic prompted lots of questions and we can all be thankful to our commissioner for presenting a tough subject in a straight-forward, fair and understandable way.
Meeting adjourned 1:11 sharp.
