Minutes by Andy Rebuck:
Why did the chicken cross the road? Where can you go on August 23 to enjoy a cold drink, hot food and scintillating conversation? When is 13 a lucky number?
Yes, please continue to follow along to possibly learn the answer to these three questions and much more revealed at today’s meeting of the Rotary Club of Harrisburg.
A full-house was in attendance as President Carrie wielded the gavel at 12:10 sharp. Speaking of sharp, Tom Arnoldi led the group in the Star Spangled Banner, followed by an impromptu prayer from Albert Schmidt and introduction of guests and visitors by Wil Everhart. (We enjoyed seven guests, including past exchange student, DJ!)
Which answers question number one above…”to get to the Harrisburg Rotary meeting, of course!
Bob “Dominican” Hall took four minutes for a “Rotary Minute” presentation where he eloquently expressed his deep appreciation for our international efforts especially during days like the time he was a part of a team that inoculated nearly seven hundred thousand children in one day in India !
August 23 there is only one place to be, yes, that’s right, plan to be at Al Baker’s humble abode for a happy hour event filled with, you guessed it, cold drinks, hot food and scintillating conversation.
Tom Imholte wowed the attendees today with his mini classification speech presented in poem format! We learned that certain words are difficult for a civil engineer with Dawood Engineering to rhyme and many in attendance will now argue that Tom may have earned the honor of most creative mini talk ever!
Our club flipped enough pancakes this past fall to generate $13,000 check which Jewel presented to the Harrisburg School District ’s Pre-K program. (Now you know when “13” is a lucky number!) We also learned that past support has aided the District in securing more than 500 books for 35 different classrooms!
Our very own Geoff Dunaway introduced today’s speaker. We thoroughly enjoyed an energetic, enlightening and edible presentation by Sec. of Agriculture Dennis C. Wolff. Sec. Wolff highlighted the department’s efforts relative to food safety. We learned about the many tasks involved in licensing, inspecting, educating and regulating more that 5000 manufacturers, 2200 warehouses, 1500 retail outlets, 27,500 restaurants, 2600 school cafeterias, and more.
With headlines on spinach, Chi-Chi Restaurant and various other food scares, it was very comforting to this scribe that Sec. Wolff and the many department employees have prevented any food borne safety issues from ever emanating in Pennsylvania. This scribe believes that we are very fortunate to have the Department of Agriculture working full time on our behalf.
