Attendance at the May 21 meeting for “Club 23 in All the World” rivaled the crowds that Mayor Reed and Governor Rendell usually garner. In fact, overflow tables were set in the lobby area to accommodate the late arrivals. Why the mad rush to the Hilton on this sunny May afternoon? Did all of these folks come to honor Bob Saline, recipient of the 6th Robert D. Hanson Rotary Excellence Award? Did some hear that Wil Everhart would be brandishing the Good News Reporting microphone? I suspect that Doug Pieper convinced at least a handful to come hear him sing bass with two professional tenors in a meeting-opening rendition of America the Beautiful. Oh, and there were the students and teachers of the month who came themselves to be honored at the hands of the gracious and eloquent Terry Barnaby. But the chief culprits for the overcrowded conditions at the Hilton were a large remnant of the 4th Year Youth Community Development Team who had just attended a Welcome Reception at the Hilton, 35 students who were invited to attend the Rotary meeting with their parents and class advisors.

It was a timely meeting for the YCDT group to attend. Bob Saline, “the man behind the camera”, was granted the Robert D. Hanson Rotary Excellence Award as the club member who best exemplifies the 4-way Test in his personal, professional and Rotary life. In his brief address, Bob promoted Rotary and Rotary volunteer opportunities, but mostly he honored Bob Hanson, the one who recruited him into Rotary involvement, as a devoted and visionary community servant. “Bob Hanson knew the power of strategic thinking in pulling together community”, Saline said, recalling both his and Hanson’s early work with the Strategic Planning Committee and the YCDT Planning Committee.

As a prelude to Bob Saline’s recognition, John Smither read a Memorial Resolution honoring Robert Hanson for his life of service above self. Seated at the head table were four previous recipients of RDH Excellence Award, Dolores Liptak, Karen Snider, Marie Lick, and Andy Rebuck (John Judson was in Haiti).

As a postlude to Bob Saline’s recognition, Wil Everhart played the Roving Reporter soliciting good news, which on this day consisted largely of various members bragging about their kids’ recent graduations and/or vocational inaugurations.

The meeting was concluded with a brief but awesome vocal performance by Paul Pitts and Alajandro Olmedo, two of The Four Tenors, who will be performing this week at The Forum.
