LAST ROTARY MEETING:  5/23/11
Minutes by Peter Henninger:
Due to the absence of our President and President-Elect who are attending the Rotary International Convention in New Orleans, Vice-President, Una Martone, dropped the gavel at 12:15 p.m.  Al Schmidt provided the invocation and Caryn Carr, accompanied by Norma Swain on the piano, led the club in singing America the Beautiful.  After the Pledge of Allegiance and our greeting of fellow members, Tom Bream introduced Gerry Kohn, who introduced his guest, the former Chair of the Harrisburg School District Board of Control, Caleb Jackson. Tom then noted that there were no visiting Rotarians present today and then announced the Club's birthdays for the week.

Committee reports began with Peggy Grove, Chair of the Scholarship Committee, introducing the four (4) $2,000.00 winners.  The first award went to Sci-Tech Senior, Racquelle Perry, who plans to attend Hampton University this fall. The second award went to Harrisburg High Senior, Lucretia Pope, who will be attending Seton Hall University this fall. The third award was to Bishop McDevitt senior, Marissa Liberacki who will be attending Stephens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, NJ this fall.  One scholarship awardee, Shupri Hodge a senior in the CTA program associated with Harrisburg High School was unable to attend our meeting and accept her award.  Peggy then recognized the rest of the Scholarship Committee for all their hard work.

The second committee report was from the Youth Community Development Team represented by three students. The YCDT students presented a check in the amount of $5,000.00 to the Joshua Group, chosen by the students due to the Joshua Group's commitment and dedication to education with goals of implementing social change by helping students achieve over and above the scholarship they  receive in high school.  Kirk Hallett, Executive Director, accepted the check and spoke proudly of the 100 or so students that he works with and for. Mr. Hallett noted that Sci-Tech receives 300 applications for 100 slots in the Freshman class and set forth his concern with regards to the other 200 and his goal of taking the Sci-Tech program directly to Harrisburg High to provide additional educational opportunities to future unsuccessful applicants.

Vice President Martone, gave a brief report from President John from the Annual Convention, spoke about the Centennial event last Monday with the placing of the rock plaque commemorating the Rotary Club of Harrisburg's100 years of service and reminded the Club of the Centennial event to be held July 13, 2011 at the Whitaker Center.

At this point, Una introduced Tom Johnston to present the Community Service Award to Karen Snider, President of Susquehanna Consulting and Financial Group, a group she started ten years ago to help health and human services organizations flourish in the Capital region.  Tom recounted Karen's robust career in the human services industry including her five-year run as secretary for the Department of Public Welfare, the largest such organization in the nation with 27,000 employees, 150 offices and 11 billion dollar budget.  Karen, after receiving her first of two standing ovations from the Club, graciously accepted this award and spoke to our Club of her life objectives, one professional and one personal.  Her professional objective is to provide management and consulting services to organizations committed to innovation in the provision of social services. Her personal life objective is to maximize her volunteer efforts with volunteer organizations in the area which she clearly does as evidenced by her serving on between 9 and 11 non-profit boards and having received at least 20 awards for her service over the years.  I am sure everyone in attendance clearly agreed that Karen is most deserving of this award.

Being no other business to be brought before the Club, the May 23, 2011 meeting was adjourned on time.
