PROGRAM: Barbara McIlvaine Smith is a Democratic member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, representing the 156th District since 2007. She previously served on the West Chester, Pennsylvania Borough Council and was the Council's vice-president from 2004 to 2006. Barbara is an enrolled member of the federally recognized Sac and Fox Nation of Oklahoma. McIlvaine Smith is a life-long resident of Chester County, graduating from West Chester Henderson High School in 1968 and from West Chester University in 1995 with a degree in Elementary Education. McIlvaine Smith taught 4th grade at Penn Wood Elementary and also environmental education at the Brandywine Valley Association. She and her husband, Robert, incorporated their business, Brandywine Water Systems Inc., in 1980. Together they owned and operated the business until Robert's death in 2007. Their son now owns and operates the water conditioning business. In November 2009, she announced that she would not run for re-election in 2010, saying that she was frustrated with the progress of the post-pay raise reform movement. McIlvaine Smith was married to her late husband Robert for 35 years. They have two grown children, a son and a daughter, and one granddaughter. • Congratulations to Deb Abel as Abel Personnel receives Governor's Employer Achievement Award. • Congratulations to Andy and Gail Rebuck on the marriage of their daughter Lauren to Steve Andrews. • The 2009-10 Rotary year is almost over and your opportunity to support The Rotary Foundation's programs to eradicate polio and bring clean water, food, medical supplies and other life necessities to those less fortunate is coming to an end. 46% of the club has NOT YET made their annual donation - please send to the Rotary office or ask to be invoiced no later than June 15th. • The Fellowship Committee invites all members and their guests to attend our “Nine and Dine” events in 2010. Once a month, at a different venue each month, we will play nine holes of golf and have a chance to grab a bite to eat and a cold drink. In order to plan ahead and accommodate attendance every month we ask that you sign up either for the golf and dine package or either golf only or dine only. In other words there will be a sign up sheet each month. (You certainly can play golf with a preplanned group or ask to be grouped by the host of each event.) This is not a fundraiser for the club-it is a fellowship event-but you will need to budget to pay the announced fees for the golf and food. You will also receive a make up for attendance! Our third Nine and Dine event is Tuesday June 22 at Colonial CC with dinner to follow at Giotti’s Italian Restaurant. The package to play and ride a cart is $25. We will then drive a minute away and enjoy a great meal at Giotti’s. We can set up as many tee times as we need between 3:50 and 4:50 that day. Please sign up today or as soon as you can as we will need to confirm our playing needs with the course in the next few weeks. • DISTRICT NEWS: |

Minutes by Steve Baloga: Matt Lane gave a mini-classification presentation. He is Development Director for Central Pennsylvania College and Foundation. The school was established in the 1800s and boasts 1,200 students including 400 living on campus. Andy Rebuck announced that tomorrow we were having our monthly Nine & Dine golf and dinner outing at Colonial Country Club. The next one is scheduled for June 22, 2010. Jeff Boswell introduced visiting Rotarians and guests and also conducted Good News reporting. Bob Hostetter introduced our speaker for today – our own John Judson. John discussed how he got involved in providing humanitarian aid to Haiti. He discussed his work at the Hospital Albert Schweitzer; his role in setting up a Rotary Club in St. Marc, the community in which the hospital is located; and the challenges faced in the aftermath of the recent earthquake. He noted that in spite of being the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere, the people of Haiti are strong, resourceful and spirited. A mission to Haiti is planned for this Fall. Details to come. There is no meeting next Monday for Memorial Day. The next meeting is June 7. |
