PROGRAM:

Michael Horgan - A native of Harrisburg, Michael is a familiar figure throughout the business community. In 1984, Michael established and managed the video production division of J.P. Lilley. Five years later, he bought the business from Lilley and started JPL with only three employees and used rented equipment. But Michael’s sharp vision and creative instincts helped grow the company from a small video business to a regional media communications powerhouse.

While Michael holds the title of “Executive Chairman,” he is easily accessible to every JPL employee. He constantly sponsors programs that help to build strong employee ties and personal growth. His unwavering belief that employee satisfaction is critical to success has led JPL to be named one of the “Best Places to Work in PA” seven years in a row.

Day-to-day, Michael consults with the Executive Team, leads company initiatives and provides creative vision for special client projects.

Michael lives in a remodeled barn that he designed himself in the Linglestown area.

Anson J. Flake is a licensed Pennsylvania attorney who co-founded and wrote the original business plan for HydroWorx International, Inc.  HydroWorx is a manufacturing and service company specializing in the Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation industries and whose customers include Pittsburgh's Steelers and Penguins; Philadelphia's Eagles, Phillies and Flyers; NASA, Navy Seals, Nike, Penn State Football, Manchester United Soccer, Chelsea Soccer, NY Giants, Cleveland Cavaliers, North Carolina Tar Heels, Oklahoma Sooners and hundreds of colleges, pro teams and healthcare companies throughout the World.

HydroWorx has been listed as an Inc. 5000 Fastest Growing Company in America and in the top 15 "Best Places to Work in Pennsylvania" each year it applied from 2006-2008.  The Company has been featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated and showcased on TV's the "Biggest Loser" and "The Doctors" shows.

Anson is active in the Water for Dreams charity and he and his wife, Katie, have two children and reside in Enola, PA.

Minutes by Steve Baloga
President Barry brought the meeting to order at the Hilton as customary with singing, the Pledge of Allegiance and the invocation.

Wil Everhart introduced an extensive list of guests and visiting Rotarians, perhaps the largest number of guests ever in attendance at a regular meeting.

President Barry noted that we have two prime Roster Book advertising spots available. Please see Linda for information. He also noted that the Student of the Quarter Committee was looking for 3 committee members. Contact John Sutliff for information.

Chad Barger gave a mini-classification talk on his role at the Cultural Enrichment Fund. Last year the Fund raised $500,000 for various Arts organizations. Chad noted that one dollar of investment in the arts yields $7 in economic impact.

Bob Hostetter introduced our speaker Mayor Stephen R. Reed to a standing ovation.

To get it out of the way – Mayor Reed did not make any announcements about his reelection plans or future plans for that matter. He said nothing about the primary election. We didn’t even have time for a Q&A session after his prepared remarks, so his presentation was restricted to a state of the City commentary as has been his custom in years past.

After thanking the Harrisburg Rotary Club for our community service efforts, the Mayor discussed his three major priorities for the City – economic development, alternative revenue sources and improvement in government effectiveness and efficiency. He discussed some of the innovative ways in which his administration encourages economic development. He feels the economy we will face after the current recession will be quite different from the one we dealt with prior to the recession. He also talked about the challenges and successes of the City’s schools. He noted that the best way to predict the future is to invent it.
