LAST ROTARY MEETING:  2/9/09       58%
Rotarians   76    Active Specials  6     Guests 8     Visiting Rotarians 2   = 94

Minutes by Peter Henninger
The Rotary Club of Harrisburg, number 23 in all the world, met on February 23, 2009.  President Barry called the meeting to order promptly at 12:17 p.m. After acknowledging Al Morrison for his always splendid ivory tickling (more on Al later), Dick Stewart provided the invocation and Jean Beatty led the club in singing 2 verses of America the Beautiful.  Thank goodness for the second verse printouts!

Craig Wisman provided the Rotary minute reminding the club of the goals of the Rotary International Foundation and specifically reporting on the Polio Plus program and the matching grant challenge of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation whereby the Foundation has pledged $350 million to our efforts provided RIF can raise $200 Million on or before June 30, 2012.  Please continue your great work in helping RIF reach our goal of eradicating polio throughout the world.

Bill Spahr introduced the visiting Rotarians and guests. Of particular note was the visit and brief talk  by President –elect Nikolai (sp.) from the Country of Moldova, which was a part of the former Soviet Union. Nikolai informed us that Moldova has three clubs, is part of District 2241 which includes the neighboring country of Romania, and informed us that his club’s service concentrates  on the children and needy families of central Moldova.

DGN Gary Crissman from the Colonial Park club updated us on RYLA.  For those of you not in attendance, look it up or ask a table mate next week.

Caryn Carr updated the club on the upcoming youth exchange weekend and asked for volunteers offering makeups and a great sense of satisfaction for participating.

John Judson then recognized three new Paul Harris fellows; Karen Snider, Jack Carr and Greg Sutliff and also recognized Ken Connor for attaining PH2 status (a second fellowship).  John then turned the mic back over to President Barry who recognized new Paul Harris fellow Al Morrison.  A standing O greeted Al and his heartfelt thanks to the club for this recognition was quite moving.

Jewel Cooper then introduced our program.  Deb Pierson, founder and owner of Pierson Computing Connection, Inc., the Capital Region Chamber of Commerce small business of the year 2008. PCC is a state and nationally certified WBE (Women Business Enterprise) providing technology implementation to a wide variety of businesses and organizations.  Deb gave an excellent presentation on computer based instruction initiatives in our public schools which is very quickly and noticeably showing increased grades, scores, learning and achievement.  In fact technology shows greater results than decreased class size!  It was great to hear that PA is “ahead of the curve “ in computer based teaching in our public schools.

Barry then closed the meeting at 1:20 p.m.
