PROGRAM:

Elected in 2006, Senator Casey was the first PA Democrat elected to the Senate since 1962.

Senator Casey has been extensively involved in the health care reform debates.  In addition he has been a strong proponent to increase access to early childhood education and reversal of the chronic under funding of child care.  He has been an important advocate for the expansion of the Children’s Health insurance program, which is modeled after the Pennsylvania program started by his father.

Serves on the following Senate committees: Foreign Relations, Agriculture, Health and Education and Labor and Pensions.

Served as PA’s Auditor General for 8 years and as PA’s Treasurer for 2 years.

He was born and raised in Scranton, the eldest son of the Late Governor Robert P. Casey and his wife, Ellen.  He is married and has four daughters.  He is a graduate of the College of Holy Cross and has his law degree from Catholic University.

His Father taught him that “all public service is a trust, given in faith and accepted in honor.”

•  YCDT: Goodwill Keystone Area and the Goodwill Industries Keystone Area Foundation awarded a $1,000 grant to the Youth Community Development Team (YCDT) in support of its focus on “job training and access to employment.”  The grant award is a result of a student-led fundraising appeal made to the community on January 12, 2010 at which young people from Harrisburg city schools expressed their desire to changes lives by focusing their unique energies and ideas toward job training and preparation services.  Students have issued an RFP of their own, offering a grant award of $6,000, and are seeking applications from local organizations that can incorporate the students’ help in connecting people with jobs!  Funds from the Goodwill Industries Keystone Area Foundation, coupled with local donations from Fulton Bank and many local community leaders will be supplemented by the Rotary Club of Harrisburg to create the $6,000 grant.  For more information or to access a copy of the RFP, visit www.hbgrotary.org .

Minutes by Steve Baloga:
President Carolyn brought the meeting to order at the Hilton as customary with singing, the Pledge of Allegiance and the invocation. Al Morrison provided piano accompaniment.

Peggy Grove introduced our Students and Teachers of the quarter.

Ron Guss announced that a nice reception was held for our exchange student Lucas, his parents and host family. Lucas’ parents attended our meeting today.

Caryn Carr announced that this coming weekend we will be hosting 35 Youth Exchange Program participants. We need donations of food and drinks (or $’s) for the event, an overnight woman-volunteer and a Saturday 5 to 9:30 PM volunteer.

Jack Detweiler introduced our speakers for today. Tim Schaeffer, of the PA Fish and Boat Commission and Matt Royer of the Chesapeake Bay Foundation spoke on the environmental issues surrounding development of natural gas from PA’s Marcellus Shale deposits. 64% of PA is underlain by Marcellus Shale deposits, which lie 1 mile below the surface. A considerable amount of water is needed to extract the gas contained in the shale. New pipelines are being built to transport the gas, and drilling sites average around 5 acres. The use of so much water creates a variety of environmental issues which our speakers discussed. A severance tax could help defray the costs of effectively regulating the extraction process.

Please remember our next meeting starts at 11:30 AM to accommodate Senator Casey’s schedule. Please be on time as the doors will be closed when the Senator begins to speak (i.e. you won’t be let in!) Lunch will be served after Senator Casey finishes speaking. If you would like to bring a guest, please notify Linda.
