HAPPY BIRTHDAY |

PROGRAM:
Author, speaker, and real-world leader Joseph Robinson, Jr. is passionate about helping people identify and cultivate vital characteristics of leadership. Robinson conducts workshops and seminars on leadership topics, strategic planning, team building, and conflict resolution. Whether you lead in church or the community, a classroom or boardroom, there are some essentials you must know. Some might call them principles, but Robinson believes they are much more and has identified what he calls 7 leadership imperatives, gleaned from the life of the biblical figure, John the Baptist.
In 2006, Robinson took an early retirement from his position as a senior division manager for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, to focus on a speaking and writing ministry to help equip others with the knowledge and tools they need to lead in their own world. His 26 years of public administrative experience provided him with a laboratory for implementing his 7 leadership imperatives. Over more than two decades with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, Robinson honed his supervisory, mentoring, and communication skills, and was certified as a quality manager through the American Society for Quality. He understands business and the challenges inherent with delivering quality products and services.
As a deacon at his church, The Greater Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, Robinson also appreciates how leadership characteristics in the secular world translate into the church and ministry setting. He knows from experience that effective leadership at all levels is essential.
Included in Robinson's varied experiences is having obtained his BA degree from the University of Virginia. An active member of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Robinson also serves as Executive Director of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Leadership Development Institute. This program is an initiative of the Harrisburg Interdenominational Ministers Conference to develop emerging community leaders.

Minutes by Andy Rebuck:
March, march, march, march….
No, we are not suggesting that you join the US Army-although that is certainly an awesome adventure and will be a part of notes to follow.
No, we are not talking about March Madness NCAA basketball tournament-although that is an exciting event and will also be a part of notes to follow.
No, we are not highlighting the month of March, St. Patrick Day or anything to do with March-although it is a windy, wild month indeed and without a doubt will be a part of notes to follow.
Yes, we are ready to outline the “march” of the Rotary Club of Harrisburg, #23 in the world, at our meeting March 16, 2009-and that is surely a wonderful thing so please keep marching (uh, I mean reading.)
At exactly 12:19 President Barry tipped off the meeting and handed the ball to John “Scoring Machine” Griner with the invocation and to Tom “Three-Point” Arnoldi with club singing before he pulled off a behind the back, no look pass to Carrie “Public Relations Specialist” Wissler Thomas.
Like flying a kite on a beautiful spring day, Terry “Sovereign Bank Superstar” Masch gave a crisp, 3 minute note on her work with area businesses in seeking to be a part of creating and maintaining a thriving business community. She did some real soaring in this presentation so if you missed, make sure you catch up to her and get the notes.
Speaking of marching, Caryn “Youth Exchange Weekend” Carr marched sharply, albeit, with a small stumble (ask her for the details on that) as she thanked the YMCA, the Whitaker Center and all the volunteers for hosting a wonderful and memorable weekend for our District exchange students!
It surely was like a four leaf clover when Dr. Marcela Meyers marched into our meeting with an update on the Foose School Vision Project slated for April 14-16. This three-day project will offer free eye exams and glasses to children from sixteen Harrisburg schools. Please march to Linda’s desk and sign up to volunteer on these days as we need your help.
At exactly 12:44, Rotarian Jeff “Meet Jerry Sandusky” Gelburd introduced today’s speaker with the message that many of us strive to make a difference and balance that desire with work as we can’t afford to give up our day jobs. However that is exactly what today’s speaker did….
Jerry “March With Me” Sandusky walked us through his hands on involvement with The Second Mile using his wit, his unassuming style and his ever present passion for focusing on youth.
This scribe’s notes will tell you that our club was lucky to have Coach Sandusky tell short stories about the children that have been helped via the Second Mile. Every Rotarian in the room was nodding their head in unison as he read the sign that appeared in his kitchen-“We do 2nd chances, we do thank you, we do loud (real good) and we do love and hugs.”
Jerry would have found it easy to enlist us in his army of volunteers when he talked about the many programs tied to Second Mile-the friends, the fitness, the foster support, the leadership and the children’s needy fund.
He finished his talk with the phrase “some of the children soar like eagles, some just have the best day of their lives.” Our club marched out the door at exactly 1:14.
