PROGRAM:

Dr. Gerald L. Zahorchak was selected by Governor Edward G. Rendell to lead Pennsylvania's system of education as Secretary of Education.

Dr. Zahorchak has been a dynamic leader at every level of education. Prior to his nomination, Dr. Zahorchak served as the Pennsylvania Department of Education's Deputy Secretary for Elementary and Secondary Education, where he was responsible for the education of more than 1.8 million school children in the Commonwealth. As Deputy Secretary, he led the development and implementation of support systems for public schools that are working to meet the high demands set by Pennsylvania and the federal No Child Left Behind Act. Before assuming his duties with the Commonwealth, Dr. Zahorchak worked closely with students at virtually every level of education as a superintendent, principal, teacher and football coach.

Dr. Zahorchak has served in a number of civic leadership positions also. He is a former member of the school board of the Greater Johnstown School District and of the Johnstown City Council. In addition, Dr. Zahorchak served as Deputy Mayor of Johnstown. Dr. Zahorchak also serves on a number of boards including the Board of Trustees for Penn State and Temple Universities, the University of Pittsburgh, the Board of Governors for the State System of Higher Education, the Pennsylvania League of Urban Schools Board of Directors and the United Way.

Over his distinguished career, Dr. Zahorchak has received numerous awards and recognitions. In 2005, he was honored with the Pennsylania Association of Federal Programs Distinguished Educator Award and the Educational Excellence Award from the PA Association of Elementary and Secondary School Principals. In May 2006, the Johnstown business community established the Zahorchak Endowment to provide scholarships to high school students participating in the Dual Enrollment program - a program designed to help high school students attain college credits while also completing high school.

Dr. Zahorchak received his doctorate from The Pennsylvania State University, earned a master's degree from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and a bachelor's degree from St. Francis University.

PRESIDENT GARRY called the meeting to order at 12:07 on the dot, noting we had a full agenda for the day but not before reminding everyone that we are, indeed, among the first 25 Rotary Clubs in all the world (ok - #23).

CARYN CARR led singing of "My Country Tis of Thee" and Joe Summers gave a moving invocation that spoke to sharing both the bad and the good with those to whom we are closest and ending with the fact that we are all God's children to love.

BIG NEWS for all you computer geeks. KENT FRESE has developed a new website for the Rotary Club. Make sure you check it out. www.hbgrotary.org It has everything and it looks SO professional. Thank you Kent! Please don't ask me my password to get into the secret part of the sight. I forgot it already...

PRESIDENT GARRY reviewed two volunteer service opportunities in March - the first is March 3 to March 9 - a Dental Clinic at HACC for Foose School. Volunteers are needed. Spanish fluency is a plus. Between April 11 and April 19, a vision clinic will also be held. Linda will send out a sign-up sheet. Try to make one of these dates as multiple volunteers are needed.

MARK your calendars. May 10-12, 2007 is the District Conference at Hershey Motor Lodge. Please come and help support our DISTRICT GOVERNOR JANICE.

SHARON STABINSKI is selling candy on behalf of the YCDT. Two thoughts, Sharon. 1) You can't say "No Calorie" about chocolate at a Rotary meeting - our Four Way Test asks if it's the truth. 2) We all gave up chocolate for Lent so you're torturing us. (If you didn't give it up and you're into calories, see Sharon.) I must admit it looked good.

DEB ABELmoo was back to show us pictures of R.Belle in action. I wonder what the photo shop that develops those pictures thinks about Rotary...

CAROLYN DUMARESQ was up next asking for volunteers for the Inbound Rotary weekend. She especially needs "Creatures of the Night" to sleep on the floor at the "Y". If you're not up to that, how about accompanying the students to the Planetarium?

MARIE LICK introduced our visiting Rotarians and Guests. Among them was Margaret Kortze, who practically got a standing ovation because she is missed soooo much. She's now a member of Mechanicsburg North Rotary. Their gain. Our loss.

PRESIDENT-ELECT CARRIE WISSLER-THOMAS announced that all Committee Chairs are in place for the coming year. Great planning, Carrie. Now SHE needs YOU to sign up to work on the committees. A sheet is in your badge board. Please return to Linda.

BILL SPAHR had the privilege of introducing Students and Teachers of the month. We had students from Bishop McDevitt, John Harris, Harrisburg Sci-Tech, and Harrisburg Career Tech Academy. In process are a drama major, a graphic design major, an MD (who's looking forward to "cutting"!), and a General Motors technician. What a variety of students and so well-spoken.

AL BAKER (aka "No-Mike-necessary") got up and was promptly upstaged by the President who had a question for Rotarians (Who is the incoming RI President?) GARRY agreed to put double in the basket if anyone came up with the answer. AL heard from BILL BOLES, JEFF BOSWELL (note the alpha order these two got up in), MARGARET KORTZE, GINNY ROTH, MEG CONNERS, CAROLYN DUMARESQ, and KENT FRESE who knew the answer to the President's question - W. Wilkinson from Canada. (See, all that work on the web site and it "paid off".) AL capped off the news by bragging that he had been in Jamaica when the big storm hit. (Did you pay double for that comment, AL?)

Our guest speaker was Dave Brandt of Messiah College. He is the "winningest" (It must be an official word - it was in my Rotary Roundup) college coach at any level of NCAA men's soccer. He spoke about his insights into his teams' successes and his overall philosophy of life. His core values are:

1) We dare greatly

2) We work hard

3) We choose to be positive

4) We mean no offense and take no offense

5) We show no weakness

6) We finish strong

7) We walk like champions

8) We support the team mission regardless of our circumstances

9) We are a collection of friends first and soccer players second.

10) We seek excellence in all areas, not just soccer.

11) We want our four year experience to have an "unspeakable impact" on our lives.

His core beliefs are:

1) Positive team chemistry

2) The whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

3) You need a net of people to catch the elusive butterfly.

4) To matter is a higher calling than to be successful.

5) Leaders must serve in order to be true leaders.

6) All people want to be part of something great - they just leadership to get there.

7) Success is how close you are to the melody in your head.

Along with that is his goal: To be the best place to play college soccer. He emphasized that this is the win, not the score at the end of the game.

Nice talk, coach. Even those of us who are not sport fans in the audience got a relevant message.

PRES GARRY closed the meeting at 1:17 with a "See you all next week" at 333 Market Street at 11:45 as our speaker is going on first and we need to start early.
