PROGRAM: John Green is the Director of Community Relations for Gift of Life Donor Program, the nonprofit organ and tissue donor program serving eastern Pennsylvania, southern New Jersey and Delaware.  He has worked with a variety of non-profits over the last 24 years, including 9 years with Gift of Life.  John has extensive experience in the development of public education initiatives and diverse volunteer programs.  John is the Faculty Chair of the Donor Designation Collaborative with Donate Life America, a national organization promoting organ and tissue donor designation. 

Working with a talented department, John is responsible for overseeing all aspects of Gift of Life’s community outreach and education programming including media relations, volunteer coordination, education programs, multi-cultural affairs, paid and public service advertising campaign, marketing communications, special events, and public and legislative affairs activities.  He has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration from Millersville University.

5. YCDT: Goodwill Keystone Area and the Goodwill Industries Keystone Area Foundation awarded a $1,000 grant to the Youth Community Development Team (YCDT) in support of its focus on “job training and access to employment.”  The grant award is a result of a student-led fundraising appeal made to the community on January 12, 2010 at which young people from Harrisburg city schools expressed their desire to changes lives by focusing their unique energies and ideas toward job training and preparation services.  Students have issued an RFP of their own, offering a grant award of $6,000, and are seeking applications from local organizations that can incorporate the students’ help in connecting people with jobs!  Funds from the Goodwill Industries Keystone Area Foundation, coupled with local donations from Fulton Bank and many local community leaders will be supplemented by the Rotary Club of Harrisburg to create the $6,000 grant.  For more information or to access a copy of the RFP, visit www.hbgrotary.org

4. ROTARY DISTRICT 7390 /WGAL-TV 8 SIXTH ANNUAL TEACHER IMPACT AWARDS nominations are now being accepted. The program will identify and honor teachers who have influenced students’ lives, both academically and personally. WGAL has posted the nomination form on the station’s web site (wgal.com) under the “Community Page” section. Nominations are also available through any Rotarian in the Lebanon, Lancaster, Dauphin, Adams, Cumberland, Perry and York County area. WGAL and Rotary are encouraging students, school administrators, PTOs, Alumni Associations, parents and anyone with first hand knowledge of an outstanding teacher to nominate him or her for this award. Recipients of the award will be profiled on future News 8 broadcasts in May, 2010. A Teacher Impact Awards recognition banquet is being planned for Monday, May 17, 2010.

Minutes by Mark Stone:
The Rotary Club of Harrisburg opened it's weekly meeting at 12:19 P.M. by President Carolyn.  Howard Ross provided the invocation, followed by singing of our national anthem and pledge to our flag. A meet and greet of fellow Rotarians and guests followed.

Tom Bream was called upon to introduce Guests and Visiting Rotarians. Rotarians Alexander, Lehman, Haas, Utley and Black brought guests today. Visiting Rotarians included Mike Casey and his wife from the Leesburg, Virginia club. We sang Happy Birthday to Dave Bedard and Caryn Carr.

Caryn Carr reminded all that the Youth Exchange weekend will be the weekend of March 20th (Saturday and Sunday).  Volunteer help is needed for a variety of shifts. Please contact Caryn Carr or Ron Guss if you can volunteer some of your weekend time to assist these great young people.

Una Martone informed the club that the Youth Community Development Team (YCDT) has raised $2,850 and their focus will be on connecting people to employment opportunities. She thanked the Goodwill Foundation who contributed $1,000 and a list of individual Harrisburg Rotarians who helped with a financial pledge.

Mini Classification Talk - Chris Dellinger

Chris is an associate civil engineer within the land development group of Herbert, Rowland & Grubic. He works with municipalities, retail, residential and industrial clients. His biggest challenge is working with the myriad of zoning regulations, building regulations and the permitting process that comes with the 2,500 boroughs, municipalities, and cities within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania as it relates to developing solutions for his clients. Welcome to Harrisburg Rotary, Chris!      

Program -  Speaker:  The Rev. Brenda Alton
Topic:  "What kind of Place is Harrisburg: A Personal view"

Reverend Brenda Alton is a native of Carlisle, Pennsylvania who most recently accepted a position with the City of Harrisburg as ombudsman and administrative assistant to Mayor Linda D.Thompson.  She serves as the mayor's liaison to improve relations between the community and city government. She recently stepped down as president of the Interdenominational Ministers Conference of Greater Harrisburg.

Reverend Alton provided us with a rather candid take of both the good and bad (in her view) of the city of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.  In her view Harrisburg is more than restaurant row. Despite the population loss, blighted structures within various neighborhoods, potholes and schools in disrepair, Harrisburg is a city on the brink of greatness.  Harrisburg is an ethnically diverse city whose people are friendly and one where neighbor helps neighbor even when a spike in crime or winter snowstorms comes upon us.  She encouraged us to rediscover Harrisburg by helping a non-profit organization or getting involved with a community group.  In her estimation, all ethnic groups need to change their "mindset" before all groups can come to the table to work on solving the cities problems and challenges. She believes that the city is about to change from a city that was "familiar" to something "great." A short question and answer session followed her remarks.

We stood and repeated the Four Way Test. The meeting was adjourned at 1:10 P.M.
