Minutes by Mark Stone:
A sparse crowd of Rotarians made their way to the weekly meeting of the Harrisburg Rotary Club held at the Pennsylvania Department of Education Offices at 333 Market Street on this snowy Monday. President Barry Ramper opened our meeting at 12:18 PM. Howard Ammons led us in prayer, and Caryn Carr led us in song with "God Bless America" and a pledge to our flag.
Rotary Minute: Bob Hall
Bob informed us that the three matching grants secured through the Rotary International Foundation over the last four years have been put to use at the clinic in the Dominican Republic. The clinic is now a two story building serving the prenatal, dental and medical needs of the people of La Plasquala. Medical students from Penn State Hershey Medical School and dental students from Temple University are on board to serve the clinic in a rotating basis.
Visiting Rotarians & Guests - Wil Everhart
We had no visiting Rotarians today and our only guest, Deb Curcillo, Deputy District Attorney for Dauphin County, volunteered to be our speaker due to the illness of our scheduled speaker and member Dr. Kathleen Howley, Assistant Vice-Chancellor for the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education.
Mini-Classification Talk - Valerie Payne
Val shared with us that she is a native of Harrisburg and a graduate of the John Harris Campus of Harrisburg High, Harrisburg Area Community College, and Penn State Harrisburg. She serves as Director of Administration for the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission, a multi-facited role that that involves procurement, professional service contracts, consulting contracts, among other responsibilities. She has served with the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission for eighten years. Welcome to Harrisburg Rotary, Val!
Youth Exchange Committee - Caryn Carr
Caryn reminded all in attendance of the upcoming Rotary Youth Exchange weekend (March 14-15th) to be held at the YWCA. Rotarians are still needed to fill key time slots. Please see Caryn if you can help out.
Good News Reporting -Jeff Boswell
Jeff passed the styro-foam cup through the membership and the dollar bills quickly left the wallets and pocketbooks of our generous Rotarians.
Speaker -- Deb Curcillo, Deputy District Attorney for Dauphin County, Pennsylvania
Tina Nixon introduced our speaker, Deb Curcillo, Deputy District Attorney for Dauphin County. Deb Curcillo has worked in the area of Domestic Violence and Abuse for the past twenty-two years. She started the Child Abuse Office under then District Attorney, Richard Lewis in the mid 1980's. Domestic violence is still prevalent in all socio-economic groups within our society. Her work brings her in contact with victims, hospitals, community groups and police agencies. Many victims of abuse just want the abuse to stop and don't want the abuser to be removed from the couple’s home. She told us that the impact of the abuse within the home is stronger on the children who may watch and listen to the repeated abuse. In many situations she sees a repeated cycle of violence within the same family unit. Since the late 1980's more aggressive laws against batterers are on the books and law enforcement agencies have received better training to deal with these difficult cases. Dauphin County courts have mandated a "batterer's counseling" program for those involved in battering woman and children. Deb's work allows her the opportunity to work with the YWCA where she serves as a victims advocate. A very informative and concise program for those in attendance.
We all were ask to stand and we repeated the Rotary Four-Way Test. President Barry concluded today's meeting at 1:11 PM.
